One of the most aesthetic games I have ever come across. The most beautiful, intricately designed, visually amazing, shallow, boring pieces of one dimensional art I have ever come across. Would have made a better screensaver then game.

The worst puzzles I have ever played.
The most unresponsive dialogue I have ever encountered.
The least compelling storyline I've ever endured.
The most disappointing movement I've ever used.

Stunning visuals though.

This is my favorite game. I believe this is one of the greatest games ever created.

And not because the graphics are better than anything else. And not because the mechanics are better than anything else. But because this game hits the mark it was aiming at better than almost any game I’ve ever seen.

Overview:

You wake up in a random town, or a random field, in a country whose city names you can’t pronounce. You have rags, a flare, and maybe food depending on which version you’re playing on. That’s all they give you. Both in possessions and objectives. It is more truly open world than any game I’ve played. There are achievements, no leaderboards, and no winners; plenty of losers though. You can choose to farm, fight, loot, hide, or F11 and bring an end to your life.
There is no sandbox, no training ground, no manual. You aren’t part of a spec ops unit dropped in. You’re just a person. Trying to survive. You have to learn how to do things, what guns to use, what ponds not to drink from, simply from playing. A lot. It’s an extremely rewarding game in that regard. There is no map. Most modded servers have one, but I know the entire map by heart.
There wasn’t a health, hunger, or water meter for years. Even now, with one, it is vague, non-specific, just as life is. You don’t know that you have 75% health, or 12% food. All you know is that your legs hurt, you’re bleeding, and you’re hungry, all through thoughts displayed as messages at the bottom of your screen.

Pros:

Realistic Fighting.
You don’t ever get locked into a fight. It’s not an area you enter, or introduced by a cutscene. It is exactly how it would be in real life. You’re scavenging. You’re eating, drinking, building. And then you see them. You can choose to fight, or not. You can choose to run away, you can choose to chase them. And it’s all part of the same game, seamless just as it would be in life.
The gunplay is realistic without being infuriating. There is a level of realism that a player doesn’t want, or he would be out there doing it for real. The game that comes immediately to mind in this regard is Onward. I think they flew a little too close to the sun on their realism, and reloading in a firefight in borderline suicide, even in cover. Dayz hits the mark. You have to load each bullet individually - not as bad as it sounds. You have to choose which mag to put in the gun. You have to zero your sight for long range. There are no hitmarkers. Unless you watch them fall, you have no idea if you got them.
Great In-game Content
The content they added is exactly what should be in there, from the guns they choose, food you can scavenge, and clothing items such as helmets, vests, boots, and clothes, which all have individual benefits fitting to them.
Graphics
They aren’t the best graphics I’ve seen. They don’t hold a candle to games like Far Cry or Red Dead. But they are beautiful, and furthermore, I believe they hold more of a purpose. The trees, the colors, and the shrubbery throughout the map offer tactical advantages or disadvantages that make your clothing color an essential decision when deciding where to go. Also it is not an overly graphic intensive game, so frames don’t plummet during crucial moments.
Death Screen
Iconic. Need I go on.
Modding
The base game can be tedious. It takes longer to find things, longer to get places. Plus it has zombies and stamina, both of which I’m not a huge fan of. I think the modding community has done great work with this game, as they do most. I still play vanilla but typically not. I suggest you find a good modded server that takes out the parts you don’t like, and/or adds things you do.

Cons:

Vehicles
Hate to say it, but they just can’t figure them out. I believe it is one of the rare aspects of the game where realism took over a bit too much. Borderline unusable. On the plus side they are rare so there aren’t a thousand glitchy cars zooming around. They would be a great addition; I hope they figure it out.
Character Models
None of the girls are hot. I’m a simple man.
Zombies
FFS. Take them out. Call it “Day”. Or keep it “DayZ” as in like the last day. Easily the worst part of the game. Play a modded server that doesn’t have them.
The only part of the game I truly fault the devs for. Every other aspect I dislike I can immediately see what they were going for. Many of them might be exactly as intended, just not my taste. Small things, Great game, I can get over it. The zombies? I’m not sorry the “not zombies” as the devs put it. Terrible. It’s been almost a decade. Please.
They aren’t hard to kill. They aren’t terribly hard to avoid. They’re like gnats. Ever present, maybe served a beneficial purpose at one time, need to be eradicated.
Small good note - they don’t swim through floors anymore (thank god).
General
It’s not a triple A title (these days thank god). It can feel a little clunky at times, There will be glitches at times. Personally I can get over them. Not a dealer breaker. If you are pretty picky about only playing the most seamless games, I would suggest you avoid.

Pros/Cons:

Length
You aren’t gonna do anything meaningful in an hour. You might not in two. This can be good or bad depending on what kind of game you’re looking for.
Bug Fixing
Good and bad. When they choose to fix something it does get significantly better, but it takes them a long time to do it.
Curbs used to kill you. Didn’t matter how you approached them. Stepping up, down, or sideways dead. Or even worse, half the time they would break your leg and you’d have to crawl three miles to find a screwdriver to finally end it all. But they fixed it. Hasn’t happened in years. Took a long time.
Ladders. I still get flashbacks. I avoided them at all costs, still do out of habit. I’ll keep it short. Suicide essentially. Didn’t matter. You’re not different, even though every time you would think “this time will be different”. Nope. But they fixed it. Hasn’t happened in years. Took a long time.
Stamina
Meh. I’m still torn. It’s good realism but it feels tedious. So does a lot of the game and that’s what makes it great. If it had been there from the start I might love it. There’s a lot of running and limited stamina obviously makes that take longer.

Tl;dr

I’m biased. It was my first game ever on Steam years ago. I have over 2000 hours in it. I think it is a fantastic game that should be approached with the correct expectations. Watch some gameplay. If you aren’t immediately intrigued, I would say save your money. Otherwise, give it a try. If this is a genre you enjoy, then this is a game you will love.

I feel damp.
