There's no other Action RPG out there where you can play as Djeeta! Main story is a bit surprisingly short but there's TONS of post-game content including online quests with others and many other characters to play with which you won't unlock on the default playthrough.

Edit: It's worth the full price of admission if you are into the grinding aspect of things. There is a damn GOOD REASON this game is also known as Grindblue. 90% of the content is post-game after a main story that can be comfortably completed within 20 hours and you spend an ungodly amount of time repeating boss fights across 100 quests to farm for specific RNG drop materials for weapon and gear upgrades. You could play the main game and still get something out of it but there's a TON of stuff saved for post-game only that it's mind boggling. It took me about 165 hours to beat him for reference.

An absolute no-brainer to buy if you enjoy rail shooters to any capacity. Obviously inspired by After Burner, but expands on the groundwork laid by that classic arcade game and expands more by giving you multiple weapons earned in the middle of a run, dodge/shield techniques overdrive burst activations for protection and increased damage temporarily, and post-run stat adjustments which mix into both permanent and temporary for-the-next-run-only buffs depending on how well you scored in your previous attempt. Once you finish story mode the first time you unlock Endless mode which is pretty self explanatory.

The one flaw of this game is that sometimes there's a ton of stuff on screen and it can be hard to see incoming enemy fire with your player sprites that can get in the way of the view, but I feel like that is something that comes with the territory normally for these kinds of games.

Edit: HOLY **** Endless mode holds a very impressive tonal change if you can survive long enough...and the absolute reason this is so highly recommended cause JESUS CHRISTE

This game has a lot of good going for it, including a kickass soundtrack and a cool sleek visual style to it. This game is pretty easy to understand through the tutorial and is the kind of game where you can upgrade your ship with gems earned while playing. It's a little bit odd though in that you can pause at any time and mess with your upgrades as you see fit. This alone makes the game very manageable and highly unusual for a SHMUP. This directly means that this is not a good game to get for those that want an arcade experience, but for those that like shop mechanics in other shmups and design elements akin to that of Gradius, Satazius, and other horizontal SHMUPs of those kind there's some cool set pieces in this game. The main gimmick of the game involves using an energy shield to absorb any energy based attacks and counterlaser damage back to enemies. It is integrated as a forced part of the game where you must absolutely use this or you will not be able to survive. As a result, many parts are designed around this and what gives the game it's unique feel. Ultimately pretty manageable to get through due to all of the options available to the player to customize your ship practically any way you want. Weapon order, main weapon, subshot, rear pod, options, ship speed, wall bumper toggle (this actually has upsides and downsides whether it is on or off) and some stat buffing are all at the player's fingers through the upgrade system to make the ideal ship of their vision.

The game's hardest difficulty Ridiculous is locked behind a playthrough which takes about 2 hours, and this is the mode where you die in one hit and comes much more in line for those looking for an arcade experience. Once you enable this, the game does legitimately get a bunch harder and shields become more valuable as an option to tank hits you didn't dodge or defend against correctly. I can see why the devs didn't want people to beeline straight to this difficulty without having seen the game through once first since enemies become notably more tanky to the point that dying is an extreme detriment and your reflector is the thing that will be your saving grace in any situation as a result. On a regular playthrough I would get hit occasionally and feel like I had no idea what hit me so there might be some visibility issues with bullets, enough so that by the end I was a little concerned about trying a Ridiculous playthrough right away. This game is an amazingly good pickup for those that like shop mechanics in SHMUPs and want to play something that doesn't feel overwhelmingly difficult starting off.

Edit: Arcade difficulty is also unlocked at the same time as Ridiculous, the main difference in this mode being that you can only pause once in the middle of a run to sort out upgrades and you have a 90 second time limit to do all of your things in that window. Otherwise you can only access the upgrades screen at the end of each level with a 90 second time limit. Honestly after playing after my first playthrough, Arcade mode is more or less what I expected this game to be going in and balances out the overpowering nature of being able to normally change your weapons on the fly at any given time in a normal/1st playthrough. I can generally recommend this game for anyone out there that is a fan of hori shmups.

I am late to this thing but finally getting to play through it and thensome with some of the extra stuff you unlock after finishing the game once. This isn't a difficult game to clear by any means if you were focused on survival and safety, but this game shines hardest when going all in to maximize your score. The higher the risk you take, the sooner you die at the cost of higher score. It becomes sadistic to a point when everything in the game will kill you in one hit if you're insane enough to keep risk all the way up for 35 minutes. The two main flaws of this game involves screen tearing when full screen meaning you'll need to activate vsync to get rid of it but there's no option in-game for that. The other issue is that there are some real visibility issues in this game amidst the chaos of screen shake and crazy lights everywhere. It will probably take a bit of time to sit down with this game and be comfortable with it. Even if you don't end up doing the whole thing on one credit on your first try, you should definitely credit feed because there is a pretty generous amount of content unlocked after doing so with two well known Doujin shmup ships I won't spoil here that bring their own mechanics to the game for a completely new feel each time.

This game's greatest strength is being an absolutely insane powerhouse in visual style and presentation, it is loud and unique in a way that tickles my shmup strings like it's a near damn cinematic experience at times. So while the game isn't the most challenging until you push yourself harder with the risk mechanics, the presentation of this game is completely astounding. It was genuinely amazing seeing the gigantic list of testers, retweeters, streamers and special thanks given to all kinds of people in the SHMUP community in the credits, and I think this game absolutely deserves it's recognition especially with the endorsement of so many other people willing to come on board and help/promote this game. A high earned purchase for anyone looking for a SHMUP uniquely laid back in difficulty but still amazingly powerful presentation-wise. It is a real treat and I wish I knew about it sooner.

Buy to support the devs especially if you already played and enjoyed the free version. This changes things up a little bit by adding new content to do after doing 100% of the original game with a couple new layers added since the original.

Big fan of F-Zero X and GX growing up, I was impressed immediately within three races. Once this is released this is gonna be good, so if you love those two games don't hestitate to scoop it up and you got the itch for a new layer of paint. I finished a race and all of the pilots finished within 1 second and it looked freaking cool as hell. I guarantee you that if Nintendo ever decides to do a newer F-Zero game, then they are definitely going to take some notes from this game's tutorial.

Definitely worth your time after Y0 and K1. It's the first game to adopt a combat style of a later game while being a remake of the 2nd game, so there's a lot different here from the get-go and it's very hard to say right off the bat whether or not the things that changed will be buzzkillers or not. There's a lot to do in K2 compared to K1, but Y0 still remains the biggest of the three games. That being said, Kiwami 2 is a good game for those that want to go for the completionist approach as you get a wide and varied TONS of different things to do. My favorite part of this game was simply trying to complete the completion list and in turn other things like the construction site and cabaret mini games as those will legit eat up a chunk of your time along with everything else there is to do in K2.

The main story is kinda ridiculous at times but if you were like me where they loved Y0 and thought that K1 felt lame and boring in comparison to Y0, K2 will make up for K1 a bit as long as you weren't super attached to the Brawler/Rush/Beat style switching of the previous two games as the fighting style is completely different along with the way EXP was overhauled to account for 5 different types of EXP points. Having now finished Y0, K1 and now K2, they're all very good games in their own way, but they all run long enough to where it's normal to find a thing or two about each game that you didn't really like at the end of the road, and Kiwami 2's stupid thing is Haruka favors with gambling games I personally don't care to play.

Whether you play this before or after Yakuza 0 I would recommend just getting sticking to the main story in Kiwami 1 and then going to Yakuza 0 if you didn't play that first, or going to Kiwami 2 after if you played both Y0 and K1 prior. Doing Both Y0 and K1 before K2 is recommended since Y0 and K1 have very similar battling mechanics and general UI. Once you do it'll become very clear that this game walked so that others could run.

A decent game overall, but cursed/damned to be a remake of the very first Yakuza game. In short, this adds only a few features compared to the original game like more fleshed out story bits due to this being released after Yakuza 0, and by today's standards not as compelling as other games in the franchise. One issue when playing in chronological order of the story is that Kiwami has a lot of copied assets from Y0, a few bits very shamelessly. Going from 0 to K1 is a bit of a downer, since K1 feels like 0 stripped down in half and with way less to do.

Despite all of that though, I would say on sale it's still worth playing. Anything that is fun to do in terms of sidequests is also in Yakuza 0 but more fun or fleshed out. If you're brand new, my recommendation is to play Y0> K1 > K2 in chronological order. Y0 is honestly such a good game that you shouldn't waste time starting with 0 and seeing the story in chronological order.
