Pre amble: This is a campaign review only

Pre amble 2.0: As this game was getting closer and closer to release i was hyped, like seriously looking forward to it, just the news of Space Marine 2 re-ignited my love for the Warhammer franchise, i started reading the Black Library books again, I've started collecting the models again, it was a great feeling. Until i finished the campaign.

The campaign started strong, being dropped into a marshy hell-scape to purge the Xenos threat was a great introduction, the guns felt different to the first game, but i could work with that, the combat was nice and gory, it scratched the itch and the reveal Captain Titus in the Death Watch... INSANE! overall, a great first mission.

However as the game progressed, and after my 100th warrior mag dumped... it was getting stale. The combat was getting monotonous, i didn't feel like a space marine. Not to mention, we're in the middle of a hive fleet invasion, where are the Harpies and crones and Exocrines Etc Etc, the Tyranids have so many amazing models, only a handful are represented within the story. (something i hope will change with the upcoming seasons) Not to mention the amount of teasing this game has, showing a Baneblade (which is a static scenery piece) Repulsors, Impulsors and Gladiators (none of which you get to interact with) Thunderhawk gunships (Repeated clunky deployment animations) and redemptor dreads that appear for short stints then disappear off screen. It was heart breaking.

I never thought in all my years of gaming id be begging for a turret sequence, or a clunky vehicle segment. anything but run the running sim the campaign turns into.

The dialog between the characters felt dry and emotionless, the only real stand out performances where from Calgar in the closing act and that 1 random Imperial Guardsman on top of the Baneblade. The BBEG's dialog was OKAY at a push, he felt a little too butt hurt to be a chosen sorcerer of Tzeench, not to mention his laugh really started making me cringe by hour 4.

The overall story seemed pretty lacking. why couldn't we have just stayed in the hive, fighting the world ending Tyranid threat ... Nope Tyranid BBEG dies off screen by some other lack lustre secondary character (Later found out the Hive Tyrant is a boss in the Co-op missions... and you fight him at half strength) The Campaign could have been solid if it was twice as long, remained on world and the story was written around preventing Exterminatus by battling back the Tyranid threat. Instead we had to go gallivanting around some Mechanicus love shack to diddle some Xenos tech and stick it to the big blue Chaos chicken.

I could go on and on about the things that i wished to see in the campaign. All i can hope for is that the upcoming seasons release some more engaging content to spark some life into the game.

For now i'm content with the Co-op and it's sparse matchmaking pool, i just needed to get this off my chest as i war really looking forward to slaying some hordes with my heavy bolter...

I'd love to discuss this topic in the comments and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the campaign.

Lots of love <3 Sailor
