This is less of a review than a direct message to id Software:

I personally love Quake Live, as do many others. It introduced me to a style of FPS gameplay that, unfortunately, is long lost today: A shooter that values tight, meticulously balanced arena gameplay over silly things like "leveling up" and "unlockables". The progression in this game happens not with ridiculous aesthetic-type items or extremely overpowered weapons becoming available, but with you yourself. You watch your own skill grow and grow at an ever-increasing rate, and gradually learn more about the underlying mechanics & how the game itself works, which is a MUCH more satisfying feeling than finally obtaining that "72ΘnΘ$¢Öp£l@dd£r$hºt¢ro$$themÅp" rifle.

However, over time, it seems that you developers have tried to pander to the masses and "dumb down" your game in an attempt to attract more people to the game. I could easily complain about the far too easy-to-use Heavy Machinegun, which was an unnecessary addition in itself, but there has been another recent addition which I and many others find far more offensive: Loadouts. The very word strikes fear and rage into the hearts of Quake lovers, and for very good reason: It utterly destroys that which made the Quake games so lovable in the first place. Now, you don't have to fight for that hard-to-get rocket launcher anymore, because now EVERYBODY can start with one! Suddenly, studying the maps & learning important spawn locations isn't important anymore, because I can just immediately spawn with my Railgun and start kicking butt. Not only is it annoying for everyone on the map to simultaneously wield Rockets or Rail guns, but it takes a very large strategic layer away from the game. If I spawn with the exact weapons I want to start with, then there's no satisfaction when I earn a kill with them because hey, if I die, I can just spawn & try again!

What's even more frustrating is that I have to pay to be able to find custom games with the "classic" system in place. Why make us pay for the mode that the majority of us prefer, and make it limited to custom games? I believe I speak for the majority of Quake Live players when I say that you'd be doing yourselves and us a favor by putting the old style of play back in place. The FPS genre has already witnessed enough of a dumbing down- we don't need one of our most beloved old-school games to have the same happen to it.

Wow. This game..... I'm gonna be up front here. Not only do I think this is the greatest Star Wars game, but I think it's the best use of the Star Wars name outside of the original trilogy. What makes this game so special to me? For one, it's a great first-person shooter, with satisfying combat and some really great level design. But what makes this game truly stand out amongst its (inferior) Star Wars-game bretheren is that at some point early in the game, there is a MAJOR change. Well, not really a change, but more of an addition: the Lightsaber and the various Force powers. When these two are introduced, the game goes from very good to just full-blown spectacular. Lightsaber combat & use of Force powers is simply perfect in this game, especially when used in conjunction. It also brings a ton of different ways you can approach combat situations- Should I mind trick the rocket-wielding Trooper to wipe out his squad for me? Push them off the cliff one by one? Or just throw my saber and slash them away mercilessly? Also, your progression of power throughout the game is pefect- your lightsaber ability and Force powers will be FAR more advanced near the end than early on, yet the game will still find creative ways to challenge your combat prowess. Not to mention, dueling other dark Jedi is an absolute blast, and requires not only good sabering skills, but quick wits to out-think your opponent, and use your Force abilities more wisely than them. The levels are also intricately designed to allow for some fun exploration, with classic Secret Areas being scattered throughout, and there are even some decent puzzles in this game. Not only is the gameplay itself sublime, but the tale of your character, Kyle Katarn, and his return to the ways of the Force is surprisingly well-written. Although cheesy at times, the story does possess an emotional heft at certain moments, and in the end it is quite an enjoyable narrative. Oh, and all this is just covering the single-player portion of the game- there is an awesome multiplayer suite that plays well, and has some really unique gametypes going for it. All in all, I feel that this is one of the most underrated titles out there, and will always be one that I love. In my opinion, it's the best Star Wars game you can possibly find.

This is what happens when a perfect combination of narrative, level design, gameplay and interactivity meet. Not to mention the (at the time) mind blowing graphics. This is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of all of Valve's work and truly one of the greatest games I've played as of yet. It simply does everything right- the story keeps you immersed and the characters are all memorable, with dialogue and cinematics being one of the most interesting parts of the game, other than being just a break from combat (which happens all too often nowadays). The gunplay feels just right, and every weapon in your ever-increasing arsenal is great in its own way- different situations will call for different weapons. The gravity gun deserves mentioning though, as it is just pure awesome and allows you to truly use your environment to your advantage (hurling explosive barrels, slicing through enemies with sawlades, throwing enemy grenades back, etc.). There are also no cutscenes- every single event takes place through the eyes of Mr. Freeman, which is an approach that Valve absolutely nailed. As I mentioned before, the game continuously encourages environment interaction, and not just with the gravity gun. The clever puzzles throughout the game are an example of this. The enemy variety and artificial intelligence is also incredible. All in all, an amazing game. And, as a side note, WE WANT A SEQUEL ALREADY!!!!

There's a reason many people use the term "Ruined my life" to describe this game- because it is one of the most addicting games ever devised by humankind. For the insanely low price of $0.00, you get a near-perfect class-based team shooter with great balancing between classes- and they all serve a truly unique purpose, making playing as different classes feel like playing different games altogether (In a good way, trust me). There is also the fantastic addition of unlockable weapons & apparel for each of the classes (which you can also buy or trade for), which just makes the game even more addictive. There are entire trading communities dedicated to this game! It's just awesome!!! Not to mention, the game has a sense of humor that really makes it unique and keeps it from becoming "just another shooter". The cartoon-like visuals are also pretty spectacular and help to give the game its own identity. All in all, one of the best, if not THE best, multiplayer shooters around!

Wow... just... wow. What a game we have here. Playing this in the year of 2013 (After having played the wonderful Half-Life 2 some time ago), it's still a joyful experience. The awesome narrative, level design, gunplay and even artificial intelligence still work very well, making it easy to see just how incredibly ahead of its time the game was. Some things that stood out for me in particular were the level design, which changed drastically throughout the game and helped to keep things fresh, the intense (still to this day!) combat, and especially the enemies. Not only were there many different types of enemies, each one interesting and with their very own methods of attack, but for 1998 they were an extremely intelligent bunch of baddies- especially the Special Forces soldiers, who are constantly flanking and lobbing grenades. Not only that, but I found the mini-puzzles to be quite entertaining. All in all, this is one heck of a game, and there's no wonder it's been established as a masterpiece.
