I want to start off by saying I’ve played a lot of monster prom 1 and 2 (camp) and enjoyed the hell outta both. I played mainly on switch so most my hours are on there but I’m working my way into introducing my pc friends to the franchise. Now with that you may think I’m gonna ♥♥♥♥ on monster road trip, but I’m not. I enjoyed the game so far. I’ve played a few rounds and it’s fun. But I have a few problems that I feel people should know moving from 1&2 to road-trip, because they do feel a bit different. For starters the core concept of resources have changed, no longer is it gaining stats by going places then taking on challenges to get more stats if you succeed, but is now a resource manager. Which I don’t mind, but my problem comes from the fact that it feels like a random resource trader than a manager. You always get back what you put in, and from what I’ve seen so far, there’s no real way to increase the amount of resource total you were given from the beginning (for example you get 10 resources in 6 categories, equaling 60 total resources, you can never go above or below that number. Just change what goes where). And a big part of getting the super good endings (or at least just not a bad one) is to make sure you have an even spit of resources. But to end the road-trip you need to have 25 in one resource. Plus with the options feeling kinda random for what it takes and gives, it’s hard to truly plan out your adventure. And when I say random I mean the resources sound very similar so it’s hard to tell what takes from what. Mind, magic, soul, and even stamina all can feel very similar when it comes to what gives out what. I won’t get too in depth with it, it may just be something you noticed or you didn’t. Idk. But my main gripe is with the single player and multiplayer win conditions. I stated to not get a bad ended you need to manage your resources properly. Well that’s only for single player. I’m the multiplayer mode, only one can get the mega good ended, one HAS to get a bad ended, and the rest just get good endings. How it’s determined is based on how much each person put into getting to the destination. I just have a problem with this because it feels really hard to grind single player to get good endings, and multiplayer has just turned into a battle for the best. I liked how in the other games EVERYONE could get their own good endings, sure you could fight for one person or try to screw someone over, but part of the fun was choosing how to play with friends. I suppose this sounds a lot more harsh then I meant it to, I do still really love the game and the effort and time put into it, it just doesn’t feel very mister prom-y. Might’ve been better just as a side game like it was originally intended as. Still, I enjoy it a lot for what it is, really good. 3.8/5 stars (weird number I know but 3.5 felt too low and 4 feels weird for how I ranted about it for so long.)
