Farts do contain compounds that can be deadly when inhaled in sufficient quantity. So how many farts would one have to inhale to be in mortal danger? Apparently a typical fart occupies a volume of between 17 and 375 ml. We don’t have a good way of measuring fart volume in our data, so let’s take a conservative estimate of 100 ml. If you were standing in a small closet, say 1 m x 1 m x 2 m in size, that would correspond to a total air volume of 2,000,000 cm3, which would then hold 20,000 farts. According to our analysis of high-resolution flatodynamics data, the average fart releases 42.84 ppm of volatile organic compounds. If we assume that these are largely sulfur-based, then we can put the lethal dose at around 500 ppm. To fill the closet with that concentration of lethal gas would then require 233,427 farts. Given that people seldom fart more than about 20 times per day, we can conclude that inhaling farts is perfectly safe, even in a poorly ventilated room.
