So to start i wanna say that i don't really post reviews but somehow felt i needed to for this one as i both enjoyed it and also felt dissatisfied with it

THE PROS:
-Incredible sountrack that very much fits this style of game
-beautiful art style with a lot of vibrancy and colour
-The overall story i greatly enjoyed and was very satisfyed with the beginning and the end though i do have some complaints
-Good puzzles and i really enjoy it when a game gives you subtle but not invasive hints as to what you do and lets you realise it for yourself this is also shown in the boss fights and is nice to see
-interesting characters who felt very lively and funny, the gentelman fish who turns up throughout is a great example
-Very very good beginning section giving a lot of room for the rest of the game to build from
-It felt like there was decent enemy variety with maybe 1-2 new enemys per big area and with how few areas there were it felt decent enough, though it dropped off towards the end of the game.
-Many interesting bossfights though some of them, especially the guardians were less so i still enjoyed them

THE CONS:
-The combat a lot of the time felt slow due to your main weapon for most of the game being the beginner peashooter which i was genuinely surprised did not recieve a damage upgrade at any point in the game even through sidequest, instead you get new companions which, when you get the third almost entirely invalidates your first companion.
-Parts of the game felt clunky and unpolished, stealth segments in particular as a lot of the time enemies tend to see you which you are behind something, the lava instakill especially felt weird but not terrible and the whole jungle section felt like it was supposed to make you careful of what was there but the darkness really just ended up being annoying and slightly inconvenient rather than a danger or interesting mechanic.
-The story felt like it just sorta missed the middle bit, i don't really know how else to describe it, maybe bad pacing combined with a lack of avaliable exploration and sidequests just sorta made it feel like oh we're at the end okay we'll it feels like very little has actually happened but okay. It felt like there was a lot of potential here that was lost
-Screen transitions cos these were ungodly awful, Enemies can attack you from offscreen when you are trying to go into a new area. Sometimes it feels like the game wasn't designed for screen transitions but then they realised that their hidden walls would be too easy to see through so they did it anyway, this is especially highlighted durign the worst minigame i have ever played in a platformer that i liked.
-Speaking of that minigame; The cannon minigame i would say is awful in a great many ways, it's controls are very clunky and unresponsive with your turning accelerating the longer you hold down, the screen transitions(remember those?) cause you to be unable to react to the fast paced and very precise requirements in time making it feel unfairly difficult as i doubt there is any possible way to beat it first try knowing nothing about it beforehand and the game ends up simply being a test of muscle memory rather than skill which is also needed in spades. This is all i will say on this as it is optional if you don't want to 100% the game or get all the trinkets but it really highlighted how bad the screen transitions are for me.

Overall opinion:
i actually really liked the game there were a couple of moments that i really enjoyed throughout story-wise. The characters felt lively and interesting and i am a sucker for a good platformer. it did feel like there was a lack of collectable variety for me personally and i have some real pet peeves about it but to play it through was definately an enjoyable experience though i do not plan to 100% this like i try to do with some other platformers i enjoy. There is quite a bit of lost potential here but i suppose with 10 years in development they just wanted it done. I'd buy it for 20% off or less
