I ended up settling on Kenshi and have grinded it for a couple days now. I love ARK, but they make it almost impossible to host your own server and I'd like to do that. I'm going to try out a few of the other ones you recommend there and may come back to the Forest. Thanks for the recommendations!

Couple other I've not had a chance to properly try personally but I've seen gameplay/played a small amount. Take with a grain of salt:
Grounded - Unique again but pretty early in development - Story is being developed.
ARK - Doesn't strike me as the most polished but it still has active development and a lot of content at current, the price point is debatable.
7 Days to Die - Zombie survival, still early access. Played it a bit, can be annoying at times and clunky
The Long Dark - Played this a bit and it seemed pretty good but that was a while ago, been meaning to get back to it.
Green Hell - Probably the closest to what The Forest was, haven't personally tried it.
Astroneer - Been meaning to get around to this one for a while - Still a work in progress.

Writing this made me realise there aren't that many complete survival crafting games out there. Guess I should give The Forest more credit for actually being finished even if it needs to sort out some bugs.

Minecraft - Heavily moddaable to boot - Whatever experience you want there's probably a mod or a mod pack to make it for you. Vanilla is pretty OK too.
Terraria - also moddable - More so fight survival rather than personal need survival.
Subnautica - No coop but a great experience - Neat story, survival elements and a great world to explore
Rust - Not the most amazingly polished game but more content, less story but more focus on pvp in my experience.
Don't Starve is my ultimate survival game if you want to actually fight for survival. Don't Starve Together exists for coop.
Satisfactory - Not really a survival game but a good 'base' builder if you replace base with factory
Raft - Still a WIP but it's unique, wouldn't play this one solo as it'd probably get boring

Can chuck in RImworld if you want a colony management sandbox survival I guess. Oxygen Not Included as well. Might not be what you're after.

Great review of The Forest. You mentioned other games that are better, but didn't mention the games. Can you let me know your thoughts? Trying to find a good sandbox. My preference is something that doesn't require me to keep logging in to feed or maintain ♥♥♥♥, but that may be something every game requires.
