A truly excellent strategy game that continues the grand traditions of the original Shogun: Total War. If you're a fan of strategy games and you haven't played Shogun 2, do yourself a favor and give it a shot. The graphics and art style are beautiful, and the score is excellent. The game play itself is nicely balanced, while it lacks the brutal learning curve of games like the Crusader Kings series, it provides enough challenge that it's not a simple matter of grabbing the right super-units and steamrolling the opposition. Carefully managing your expansion and trade networks is essential to long-term victory, as is a solid understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your troops. Diplomacy, too, is a vital tool in securing victory: ruthlessly crushing everyone in your path may lead to resentment at home and mistrust from potential allies, but in the end there can only be one Shogun.
The Fall of the Samurai expansion is also more than worth the price. It examines an often-overlooked time period in Japanese history, during the rapid modernization of Japan when troops carrying spears and bows might have found themselves in battle against cannons and rifles. Industrialization brings advantages in terms of technology and weaponry, but can enrage those who cling to the security of the old order and lead to devastating rebellions. You must strike a balance between the new and the old, or be crushed by the oncoming might of a new era.
