Okay. I do not write reviews too often, but I felt like this game needed to be talked about in comparison to other rogue-lite games I played and my own personal experience with it.
So, you may be thinking to yourself "This game looks fun. Oooh, it's a rogue-lite, and I love those. I played Hades and absolutely loved that game. This is just another one but with a magician. Sounds amazing."
For the most part you would be correct. Some of the strongest positive aspects of this game are its theme. I would even say the theme and some of the characters are even on par with some of the characters from Hades in terms of fun yet distinct personalities.
For a general summary, here are some pros and cons with this game.
** Pros
------ Great character and theme with a minor story setup that is amazing
------ The diversity of cards and the amazing effects associated with them
------ The complexity of choosing card combos
------ Decent music for the inevitable amount of grinding ahead
** Cons
------ The card layout for those card combos
------ Pretty much just two main paths

As you can see, I am enjoying the game. However, there could be a couple of tweaks to make it either better or improve on their next game in the series.
For me personally, a rogue-lite has a few elements that I look forward to and want emulated in the games I enjoy. A rogue-lite must have a great story/theme, music, streamlined mechanics, and lots of re-playability for various achievements, awards, etc. Obvious top-tier examples of this include slay the spire and hades. In both games, the have: a tailored theme, good music for the long hours of grind, extremely succinct mechanics that makes gameplay streamlined and quick, and lots of either post-game content or achievements. When I look at any rogue-lites, this is the criteria I use. That is why games like Void bastards and Griftlands are good games but not top-tier games, since they fall short in one of these categories for me.
Dandy Ace is a good game for me. The unfortunate place it falls short in is the card layout of your card combos. This mechanic has essentially four main slots for your abilities that you will acquire as you progress, with additional cards supplementing or improving those abilities. In theory, there is near infinite possibilities since one main ability could become a supplementary ability of another. This complexity would seem great for allowing for awesome combos. And indeed, some are truly great like a blackhole and stun for massive damage, or five-of a kind with elemental damage for massive debuffs. Yet, in terms of mobility and layout for best progression, I automatically use a certain layout. Since I use a controller, my a button was always a default for a blink/movement ability, my x for a main/quick attack, my y for a long range attack, and my b for a control/big damage attack. You could have all control ability slots or damages for your four main slots but then you suffer in movement and then die. In comparison to other rogue-lites like Hades, they already have a layout based on the weapon you choose. Other powers and upgrades later acquired already improve or minorly change your layout. Since one is always acquiring/swapping out new cards, your playstyle constantly changes. If you don’t, you become severely underpowered for future battles.t
Ultimately, the complexity that initially is very exciting proves to very tedious in trying to think out the best combos for your cards. Since each card has a level that corresponds to its power, it is very easy to think to always choose the most powerful cards. Yet, some cards abilities may play to a specific playstyle that changes every time you incorporate new cards. As a result, one is constantly pausing their screen, comparing stats, choosing stats and musical chair-swapping cards to increase your power as you progress through the game. I often felt that about at least 10% of my run time was devoted to card management.
As you can imagine, this card management/constant swapping becomes very tiresome. To have a snappier (and enjoyable gameplay), I think it would have been easier on the developers to have a cards with a supplement ability already attached to them. Have the game procedurally generate these cards to make it quicker and more fun to go along the run. Limiting the cards in this way not only entirely limits the tediousness but also allows the player to still choose a layout for their own personal playstyle. You could keep the levels attached to the cards for some way to quickly judge damage/power for the needed situation and offering more cards with these already supplemented abilities available to cater to various playstyles. This would drastically improve gameplay quality and want me coming back for more hours, rather than feeling utterly exhausted after one run.
Overall, do I still recommend the game? Absolutely. However, this main issue is what personally prevents me from enjoying the gameplay atmosphere like I did in Hades.

PS For additional ways to control for card choice, the bunny wagon guy could offer to exchange a card you have and offer some choices that reflect the manual switching out of abilities (ie puts in five of a kind with poison into a magic hat and then offers five of a kind with burn, a rocket with poison, or five-of a kind with stun).

Overall, a very pleasant experience. I completed all the storyline and extras in the amount of time (although it could be definately completed in less time since some moments I stared/left the screen on too long). By far the most enjoyable aspect of this game is the story, characters, and music. The style is unique, fresh and thoroughly enjoyable. At first the puzzles were fun trying to solve. However, as the puzzles got bigger over time, they really started to disrupt the natural flow that most visual novels have. There were moments that I was staring at the screen for a very long time to solve it and honestly got a little crazy. Although they do play music while you try to solve it, hours and hours of listening to the same music drove me into a sort of furvor to finish the puzzles in a crazed state. In fact, the most fun moments of the game ended up being the timed puzzles since they added urgency to important story moments and maintained the storyline. Although I could have used hints, etc, that would have lowered my score and prevented getting the top grade to unlock bonus content.
In summary, by focusing more on the story/visual format and decreasing the complexity or the number of puzzles a little, i think this could be a very new and exciting ip like Ace Attorney. If you like Ace attorney and a great story line of unique and fun characters, then murder by numbers is a must have.

Great rogue like game. Really appeals to the rogue like and card collecting people. Excellent mechanics with varying characters and very high re-playability. Highly recommend
