I don't buy games in early access and I don't write reviews (colour me lazy), but here I am becuase Scarlet Hollow is unique. It's a pure storytelling experience, without any filler mechanics or cheap dramatic devices. Character creation seems very simple on the surface; from the pool of seven traits you choose two and that's pretty much it. But, unlike in so many games, this choice is relevant and it's only the first of many, many more.
Dialogs and interactions are superbly written, and as I kept playing my "Will-of-two-traits" begun to organically grow, reacting and engaging with the stuff around him. And let me tell you, it's very easy because even though the game seems tiny next to AAA behemoths it gave me an amazing sense of freedom. So far I had three playthroughs and every path I walked felt like my own. Each time I sided with and supported different people and each time the story opened up in new ways.
I can only imagine the challenge of creating a game like this, where every new episode requires more and more work to incorporate earlier choices. But the funny thing is I feel satisfied. Of course I want to know what's next, but at the same time I'm happy I got to experience Scarlet Hollow now, not in X years. Black Tabby Games, thank you for this amazing game.
