Hi! This is a long review. There's a TLDR at the bottom.

This is my third review of this game over the span of about 3 years. I removed my previous reviews for the sake of brevity, but for reference my first review was during the 'Player's Strike' in 2023, and my second review was about a year after. As of mid-2025, War Thunder is in a bit of a weird place. I really wish I could give it a 'meh' instead of just a yes or a no.

Let's start with the good. War Thunder has a lot to offer if you enjoy vehicular combat. The models are quite accurate and the damage models are, likewise, quite detailed. There's no health bars and the game, and at least in theory (I'll come back to this later), is easy to learn but hard to master and rewards skilled gameplay, knowledge of your own vehicle, knowledge of enemy vehicles, good positioning, and a variety of other factors. Combat can feel extremely tense and dramatic, and if you know what you're doing and aren't solely focused on grinding you can bring out almost any vehicle in the game and have some degree of fun.

The game is beautiful. Gaijin has done an excellent job at keeping it graphically up to date. The game released in 2014, but it certainly doesn't look like it. The sound design and the music is also fantastic, although Gaijin seems to have some weird obsession with tweaking the sounds even when it's really quite unnecessary. It is extremely satisfying to shoot an enemy tank and watch their turret launch off into the air in a huge plume of smoke and fire, or to watch your tracers burst into the night sky while reflecting over the water.

Now for the negatives. The first and most obvious negative to even new War Thunder players is probably the horrific grind. I have been playing this game since 2014, most of which was free to play, and I still don't have every top tier vehicle grinded out. Now on one hand this could simply be attributed to a skill issue, which would be fair, but I think the time investment to reach top tier for any normal person with a job and personal life, without premium, is extreme. This is of course entirely on purpose. Gaijin is well aware of how long the grind is (it used to be worse-- it was only made better because the player base quite literally forced them to make it better), it's why Premium and Premium Vehicles are a thing. I'm not against a free to play game having some form of monetization, most F2P games do, but Gaijin is increasingly greedy when it comes to Premium Vehicles.

A Premium vehicle used to cost about $50-60, sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less, but these days the newest Premium top tier vehicle packs cost $70-80, and I really wouldn't be shocked if they're $100 by 2026 (though not all of them are this expensive-- they recently released lower tier bundles that cost about $35, and these are actually quite good value). New players often don't want to grind to top tier, and I can't blame them seeing as how long it takes to get there F2P, but it results in lots of new players buying into top tier without any real knowledge of how to play the game which really hurts the top tier gameplay experience in addition to being a scummy practice on Gaijin's part. Top tier gameplay, for what it's worth, is really quite awful currently. It often ends up being a complete stomp within the first 5 minutes of the match. I recommend staying at 10.7 or below for the optimal experience.

The other big issues, at least to me, are power-creep and BR compression which sort of go hand in hand. As Gaijin continues to add newer and newer vehicles they will inevitably come with newer and newer technologies that make them increasingly difficult to balance against the existing roster of vehicles. This often results in certain shells, missiles, or other technologies being either far too strong (spall liners upon release) or nerfed into oblivion (TOW missiles-- these are still awful as of this review).

This is not helped by BR compression. To keep it brief, every vehicle in the game is assigned battle rating (BR), which is a number between 1.0 and 13.0 (only in Air Realistic Battles; Ground Battles only goes up to 12.0). This determines what other vehicles it will fight. Generally it's +/-1 from your vehicle lineup's BR. Unfortunately, many vehicles in this game are pushed into BR brackets they probably shouldn't be at, which means you end up with a huge power imbalance between certain vehicles. It's not universal, but it's bad enough to negatively affect most players at some point and it leaves some vehicles in such hopeless states that you're betting off avoiding them altogether.

The game also remains consistently buggy. With every major update they introduce new bugs or somehow manage to bring back old ones. This isn't entirely their fault, the game has lots of technical debt as a result of being over a decade old, but I think it'd be a disservice not to note it.

Lastly, though this is not necessarily a negative, this game is quite hard. There's a steep learning curve. You need to really pay attention in battles, and you need to be willing to learn from your mistakes. When someone kills you you should ask yourself 'why did I die?' instead of just respawning mindlessly and rushing back into the battle. Study your vehicles, study your potential enemies vehicles, practice ranging your shots, etc. Some things in the game can only be learned through experience, like map positioning or understanding when you should hang back or rush an enemy.

All in all, War Thunder is a really mixed bag. I would say that for anyone who doesn't have a keen interest in vehicular combat or military engineering, it's really not worth it. There are likely better multiplayer shooters for you to play that will almost certainly be more enjoyable.

However, for everyone else, I would (cautiously) recommend this game. I would also advise that you don't fall into the trap that is The Grind. If you play without focusing solely on the grind you can have a rather enjoyable, if occasionally frustrating, experience. If you focus solely on grinding this is one of the most rage-inducing and miserable games ever made. If you have never played this game before, please do not immediately buy a premium vehicle. Play the game for a while and make sure you really enjoy it before spending a dime on it.

I could go on forever about this game (there's a LOT to talk about regarding Gaijin as a company and the way they go about balancing this game and adding vehicles) but I've already written a small essay.

TLDR: If you're a vehicle nerd or like vehicular combat games you'll probably like this, otherwise I'd probably recommend against it, though I'd recommend most people at least try it once. It is a flawed but enjoyable game, and in it's current state I'd give it a solid 7/10. Be warned of the predatory monetization found in this game. If you just want to play around with tanks I recommend Gunner HEAT PC, and if you just want to play around with planes there's hundreds of options out there ranging from flight sims like DCS World or Microsoft Flight Simulator to casual arcade games like Ace Combat.
