You ever hear the tragedy of Bethesda's Save Player 1 campaign?

I thought not. It's not a story Zenimax would tell you. It's an industry legend.

Bethesda was a reputed developer of single-player titles so deep and so immersive they could capture your attention for years at a time. They had such a grasp on building detailed and interesting worlds, they could even release multiple iterations of the same game and their customers applauded them for it.

They became so full of good grace that the only thing they feared was... not expanding their bottom line. Which eventually of course they did. Unfortunately, they listened to the leanings of the industry and adopted an always online live-service model and their inexperience and turn from what made them so beloved became their undoing.

It's ironic. Bethesda could save others from multiplayer live services, but not themselves.
