"Hung Jury" Joe, Esquire 5 Apr, 2023 @ 6:44pm
The bright light of reality sucker-punched the blackness of my sleep. Like a kick to the groin, the rays of an afternoon sun stole away my drug-induced slumber. I turned my head and rubbed my eyes. The movement caused an avalanche of aluminum cans to crash around me creating a cacophony of painful sounds to echo through the dingy alleyway.

The sounds sent pins throughout my brain and a mangy cat yelled and darted out from under the trash heap I was laying in and among.I dusted off the front of my West Virginian sweatsuit; still covered in the debauchery of last night’s festivities I presumed. As I did so, I felt a lump within my chest pocket, so I fingered it curiously. It took a while, as my head still hurt, and my eyes were still adjusting to the afternoon sun. The lump was covered in plastic wrap, and it clung to the sharp edges of what must be that Appalachian crystal – my vice, my muse, and my sultry mistress. I would have fired it up, but I couldn’t find a lighter or my glass.

I stood up, a door from inside the alley way opened. A Hispanic woman, couldn’t have been younger than 60, appeared with rubber gloves and a bag of trash. Her eyes fell to my crouch which was unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, exposed, shriveled from the cold. I must have been helicoptering again. The lady dropped the trash and screamed muttering in what I assume to be Spanish. I did make out, “Dios mios,” as she slammed the door shut. I better zip up and get out of here I suppose as I picked up my guitar – wouldn’t want another charge.

I stumbled outside the alleyway not knowing where I was or even what the date was. It could have been December, January, or hell, even February for all I knew. She, that Blue Ridge speed, had stolen not just my money or my memories of last night, but she had stolen my mind as well. I was bricked up and shaky, been that way for some time. The wind howled through what appeared to be a New York Street. It chapped my burnt and dried lips, and it chilled my soul. The welcoming flicker of a pink neon sign caressed my face. Ladies, Ladies, Ladies, it read, and a chalkboard sign on sidewalk just under the neon light read $5 dollar drinks. I decided to step in, if anything, it would keep the chilly wind off my guitar. My thirsty wanted whiskey, but my hunger needed beans. But it had been a month of paydays since I'd heard that eagle scream…
