Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is currently the most recent game in a franchise that I had previously not touched, bar a few hours into the problematic Assassin's Creed: Unity. So as you might have anticipated, I wasn't expecting anything from a series that's best days seemed behind it.
However, with the newest game, everything I had thought about this franchise was completely flipped on its head; the game feels like a fresh take on the genre and the attention to detail within the Ancient Greek format is something that had initially got me into buying the game in the first place, but the sheer scale of what the game brought to the world of Ancient Greece is what hooked me in.
Don't get me wrong, if you were thinking of buying this game for historical accuracy, you are in the wrong place - there are a plethora of historically accurate games out there anyway. What this game brings is immersion and life into the various city-states of Ancient Greece, and it executes this flawlessly.
While I haven't gotten very far into the game (so far only ~30 hours in), it doesn't feel like the story will be stopping any time soon and, accompanied by dlc, there's certainly enough content within this game to feel like you've made your money back through a fun experience. Similarly, it should be noted that I myself tend to avoid side quests at all costs- they often feel like a waste of my time and don't offer anything of value to me. However, Odyssey makes side quests seem useful and often the feeling of accomplishment achieved by unlocking a new piece of armour or weaponry seems to dwarf any feelings of commitment to the story.
While it can be said that the story is not exactly the most thrilling, and while there is an attempt to create a political intrigue, its often forgotten or falls by the wayside to mindless quests that have you travelling far distances (while taking in the breathtaking scenery) and offing <insert baddie here>, which can feel repetitive sometimes.
Overall, if you purchased this game for a historically accurate retelling of Ancient Greece's expansive history, you will not enjoy this game. On the other hand, if you want a truly breathtaking experience fuelled by gorgeous landscapes, realistic takes on Greek culture (they even coloured the marble statues in! FINALLY!) combined with a combat system that feels smooth but brutal, as well as a stealth system that does not punish you for taking your time, rather it often feels rewarding to clear out a fort silently rather than going in loud, guns blazing so to speak, then this game is a necessary must-have to add to your collection.
