yes you can learn scales
Will you understand maybe it takes time
In my opinion it would be very frustrating task if used as your only learning tool.But it is a great place to start .
Its great fun but find some beginner books and DVD's and use them also.
After a few months other game's just seem to get pushed on to the back burner
