The citric acid is then oxidized in multiple steps to yeild approximately three NADH high energy electron carriers and two carbon dioxide molecules. These NADH molecules move onto the electron transport chain where they deposit their electrons causing protons to be pumped across the intermembrane space of the mitochondria. This electrochemical gradient, is what drives the production of ATP.
