Biomutant is a game that fundamentally feels confused. The art style and direction are great and the game is presented beautifully with lots of striking environments and visually stunning effects, but beyond that there is almost nothing beyond a very wide but shallow puddle of combat, exploration, and story.

The combat of the game is the most disappointing for me because I was sold on the premise of fast paced martial arts combined with mutations and psionic powers. The reality of the combat is that it lacks all sense of impact and ultimately feels very repetitive and tedious. In total you are presented with a total of 8 mutations, 8 powers, and 2 special abilities per weapon type, (of which there are 4 melee and 4 ranged). This feels painfully low for a game that uses combat flexibility and choices as a major selling point. Melee and ranged attacks are also mapped to one button each, which fundamentally kills any potential of a deep and engaging combat system as most of the time you will only be mashing your basic melee combo or firing your guns before waiting out reload times that feel way too long.
