This is a great game if you want more strategy in your monster-taming adventures. Every monster-collecting game has their own unique spin when catching and battling and Temtem is no different. Most battles will be 2v2 with a few being 2v1 due to NPC's being too dumb to have more than 1 monster on their team or the game wants you to obey "survival of the fittest" for a lone Tem that strayed too far from their families without backup. There are 12 types that are mostly balanced with Neutral, Digital and Wind being a tad stronger than the other types. Tems can be any combination of 2 of them with the exception of Mental/Earth as well as Neutral/any other type aside from Water and Digital. Every Tem has 2 possible traits (or passive abilities) that will play a critical role in how the Tem is intended to be used. Techniques (or battle moves) have types, base damage, stamina costs, hold values (How many turns you must wait before using) and are either physical, special, or are used solely for a unique effect such as changing stats or causing statuses. There are no chance factors like accuracy or critical hits. Instead, status ailments can be positive like Regenerating or negative like Poisoning and will last a certain amount of turns (The technique or trait will specify how long). Stat changes are permanent until the end of battle including if you switch your monster out and send them back in battle. Every Tem has their own unique base stat values of HP, Stamina, Speed, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense. These can be adjusted with SV's (Pokemon IV's that range from 1-50 and cannot be changed unless you use special items) and TV's (Pokemon Effort Values that can be maxed to 500 in a single stat with 1000 points to distribute). One of the most attractive features of the game is the fact there is no randomness in battles; you win or lose battles based on your own planning and skill. The monsters themselves have interesting designs that represent the typings they possess. You can easily find a few favorites among the 160+ monsters available. There are 6 islands that specialize in certain typings (the first is Water/Wind, second is Fire/Nature) but you can obtain a few unique exceptions like how Tateru and Skail are Neutrals that show up on the first island. Through the story you'll find lands with vivid colors and environments that feel alive. There are some NPC's that have interesting and funny dialogue, and some will haunt you (BEWARE TWIN CHARACTERS). Some have side-quests for you to complete and you can obtain valuable items and pansuns (money) as rewards. The items can be as useful as held-items or techniques to solidify your Tems' strategies or as useless as healing items you can sell at your nearest Temporium (Just sell them, you have a portable party healer on you at all times that you can use once before needing to recharge at a Temporium). As you run, surf, climb and even teleport around on your journey you'll be able to customize your character with various clothing styles and dyes that are unique to the different islands you explore. You'll also come across 8 dojo challenges (1 on each island with 2 on the second and sixth) that act as tests to see if you're a tamer worthy of the title. There's an evil organization known as Clan Belsoto that you'll have to fight throughout the game and defeat to save the archipelago.
After the main story is done you are left with many options. You finish any side-quests you haven't done. Complete the Tempedia. Breed Tems to obtain the strongest battle-ready monsters possible. Fish and do delivery missions for money. Defeat the dojo leaders every week for money and feathers (currency to spend at Tamers Paradise). Brave the lairs at the second and fifth islands for this game's version of legendaries (Tyranak and Volgon) which are raids you can go through with 4 other players to obtain the unique creatures (It costs pansuns to do them so make sure you're stingy with money!). Assemble you favorite Tems and devise a powerful team to try your luck in ranked. Even buy your own house and customize it to your heart's content.
This game has a lot of content and is worth the price. There are reviews that are negative and only address the premium store and tamer pass. YOU DON'T NEED TO SPEND MONEY ON THESE TO ENJOY THE GAME. Since the creators are still spending time and resources on improving the game, it makes sense they'd want a way to keep making money. If you can afford it, go for it. They're only cosmetics and no amount of money will give you an advantage over other players. That said it's a great game for under $50 USD and you should definitely consider getting it if you love the monster-collecting genre. Pokemon stans will trash games like this so watch a couple videos or read a couple more reviews to see if this game is for you.
