Great Game, Bad Steam Deck Performance

I love the game, but by the end of a D rank run I can't tell what is happening on my Steam Deck. Luckily I was near invincible and could take many hits because I couldn't even dodge a wrench if my life depended on it. Hopefully Deck optimization gets better with time.

Easy to get into without a greedy cash shop. You can easily get better QoL upgrades through daily gameplay. Takes 5-6 days per QoL upgrade. I never felt I hit a wall that only $$$ would solve. Has decent offline progress. I have played entirely on my Steam Deck.

So far I am liking the game and the direction it is going. I read some reviews complaining about how hard this game is versus Vampire Survivors, but I don't feel the game is that hard after the recent patch. Now I am using a different personal meta setup than I used to and it is melting everything. Before I had little love for Conrad the Knight along with arrows and tornadoes, but now they work very well. Currently using Conrad starting with Tornadoes and then collecting mines, scythe, and arrows. Easily burning through hordes like it is nothing on hard difficulty runs. Actually Conrad feels damn near invincible if you collect movement speed and damage mitigation pets. I hope they add a bit more depth to the game, but otherwise I enjoy the flow of the game. I have almost unlocked every node and am at the point where I am converting mats to the rarer ones, so I'll probably top off on all current content unlocked around 30 hours. It feels real grindy at 1st, but the pace picks up once you are tearing through the hard mode of each stage.

1st the good. This game is a reverse bullet hell with designs obviously inspired by the Castlevania series. You get choose up to 6 weapons and 6 passive gear from random offerings at level ups. Chests will only give gold and an upgrade for those already unlocked. Once unlocked there appears to be up to 8 usable heroes which each has a particular starting weapon and passive. The game play is simple and fun if you enjoy increasing your power against a seemingly overwhelming horde until your inevitable death. There is nobody to save and nobody is coming to save you. You are going to die and the question to be answered is how many of them are coming with you? The music is catchy, the upgrades are plentiful, and the horde is endless.

The bad........it's early access and obviously incomplete. That's the only negative I have to say. I played, I mastered, and I want more.

For the record I am not a regular rogue, lite, or like player. Still uber noob status going into this demo. I will not list Pros vs Cons as this is a free demo and if you are too lazy to play a free demo you are probably not going to enjoy this game based on your lack of effort. I will only share my experience of pain and fun.

So my 1st play through was both fun and terrifying. Always not far from death with hunger, thirst, and mostly pain reminding me that I am not special ...... I am a meatbag and a squishy one at that. I went in thinking I was going to be a ranged/bow specialist because staying away from mobs would be good, right? Well I missed my first 5 shots and my plans changed real quick. I ate 2 hits while switching to a sword and shield(SnS) and then dropped my enemy only to realize I had to cope with pain. Well that makes sense as I took 4 hits. The 1st skill book I found was for Pyromancy and the game tutorial had me use it, so I still had a ranged option and I made great use of it. I decided to be more defensive with SnS while wielding fire. My goal was to not kill everything as it was apparent I was not setup for this, so I prioritized escape while desperately looking for food and pain relievers. Focusing on Will Power and Pyromancy I was able to keep most mobs at bay and ate few hits as i was setup to guard at close range, but I made the mistake of trying to disarm a floor trap and failure means your suffer the trap's effect without stepping on it( I don't agree with that, but I could understand a 25% effect seeing as my legs were not on it). That leg damage would haunt me the whole time as even after stabilizing the wound it was reopened a few times from getting hit. The pain from that was a constant as it also sapped my morale. Still I managed to make it to the end where I switched back to a bow and used both arrows and fire to kill off the 2 statues and zombies. Then the Vampiric priest pulls a Dracula and becomes a Bat-Hulk. At this moment I was out of arrows so I ditched my bow returning to SnS as he took 2 steps towards me. On his 3rd step I unleashed 3 fireballs on him. He then was preparing to ram me(this does 666% damage and would kill me in 1 hit at this point). Sidestepping I then made distance till I could send more fireballs at him. After landing those hits he countered with his big AoE, but I was able to easily evade it. The whole fight he only ever landed 1 direct melee hit while I alternated between attacks with SnS and ranged fireballs. I took him down with the last ounce of my MP. I was at 36 hp and had 86% pain with only 10% morale. I seriously imagined my character would sound like Eeyore at this point as I entered the ending of the Prologue, but not before picking up the shard the boss dropped. You know how at the end of most horror movies the survivor walks away looking like they had a three-way with a belt sander and a meat grinder? That was how I imagined looked a felt walking away, but with a complete lack of commonsense to know that he should just walk away like the others did. It would be like if Seth Gecko at the end of From Dusk Till Dawn wanted to go find another bar filled with vampires at the end of the movie.

Seriously, this game makes Dark Souls look like the kiddie rides that even your kids feel to big to go on. My good choices barely outweighing my one really bad choice of trying to disarm that floor trap are the only reason I made on my 1st attempt. Anyone thinking of playing this as a pure close range specialist has some hard days ahead of them and a few tear filled rivers to cross. Your best strategy is to never get hit. Though I do find it odd that an experienced mercenary starts off with no skills and at level 1. Hopefully the full game offers different starting builds for us to choose from starting out. Perhaps he was too into drugs and alcohol and has memory problems?

In the end I enjoyed this demo and will look seriously at the full game.

Before you quit in frustration, allow yourself to fail at least 5 times. 5 times the Champion at week 52 kicked my Master's butt before I started getting better at using a strategy and synergizing my dungeons so that my 2nd team was laying out the heroes every time.

What I Liked:

1) The graphics are simple, but make use of a vibrant pallet of colors.
2) Hard, but not too hard difficulty. Until you start following a plan and sticking to it you are probably going to fail.
3) There is character progression on your selected Dungeon Master after you fail or win. Making use of your master's strengths once you gain a few levels makes a huge difference.

What I Feel is Missing:

1) The sounds of life and death in a dungeon. Maybe it needs voice work. Maybe it needs some fanfare from the winners of a fight. (Think Final Fantasy victory scenes, but shorter) Possibly hearing more from the Dungeon Masters would help. More audio on the weekly selections could make the in between dungeon invasions periods less drull.
2) Flushed out tutorials. Now I stuck with it through my failures and enjoyed it, but many others may fail in frustration and miss out on an enjoyable experience. They don't need to be long, but informative.....and optional. No starting a new game and being forced along tutorials if you don't want them.

If I think of anything else I will be sure to add to this. I never got into Darkest Dungeon, but after getting into this I think I may. I certainly didn't get the appeal of this type of game before, but now I may of become more of a fan of the Rogue and Rogue-lite genre.

Wait a month before trying this out. I have yet to see even 1 battle as the game just stops every time I walk into a tall grass area. It could be taking a while for the server to respond, but it also happens when exiting buildings. The majority of my 64 minutes is either in que or frozen in place. I understand the is EA, but as of now I cannot even play the game. Paying $35 for this state is not reasonable. You will literally do more at this point watching videos of the game. Hopefully they get this game running as intended so people can enjoy it.

Early Impression:

I will write a detailed review once I have played more than 40 hours with the game.

Tip: If you use single hand light bladed weapons you definitely will want to start with lockpicking 1 as you can find a blue tier sword with well over 200 damage in the starting area. Your 1st companion's armor will also grant you lockpicking, but it can be a problem when popping locks in the Nauts port warehouses as you need to be disguised in their uniform if you value your reputation with them. You can steal everything by switching armor quickly to unlock and then re-enter your disguise.

Positives:

+ The game feels akin to Dragon Age with noticeable remnants of Technomancer.

+ Game so far does not feel unbalanced. Melee hits hard and unbalances enemies easily. Firearms hit like a truck, but are slow and limited by ammo. Magic hits softer while being both ranged and melee while offering control and support functions.

+ The graphics and aesthetics of the environments so far are quite nice and will remind you of areas from an Assassin's Creed game.

+ The crafting/modding system can be used to give yourself a serious edge on weapon damage and your defenses. The system is an upgrade from Technomancer. The only downfall is I have not seen any hint at the option to actually craft new gear, just the ability to modify it.
+ Voice work is good, but nowhere as good as the Mass Effect trilogy's was.

Negatives:

- First thing most people playing this will notice is the optimization and jerky frames. I found lowering the clothes physics had a huge impact on this. I tried not to get to consumed into finding perfect settings for my setup, but I did put in a solid 30 minutes in testing out the graphical options until I could smooth out the rough animation.

- Second thing that stood out was that this game has teeth and I don't mean the difficulty. Just about everyone in dialog talks like they just had fresh dental work done and want to show it off to the world. It is definitely no deal breaker and is sometimes hilarious, but if immersion is really important to you then this may irritate you.

- The conversation camera moves around like it was cut together like an action sequence in most modern day films. It seems like every sentence has it's own angle or panning rotation. I personally would either like it to be toned down or give players the option to control the camera angle during conversations.

Closing:

I would say overall I am enjoying this game. I am not rushing through and am trying to do every side quest in sight while looting everything I can. Combat feels good, but I am still early in my 1st play through. At the time of writing this I am only in the 2nd town and have not entered the wilds outside. I am focusing on magic, but I can still easily run out of MP and occasionally fall back on melee. This is a very enjoyable game if you can find the right settings for your setup that gets rid of the jerky frames and animations. The game definitely has some flaws, but for me personally they are all currently graphical.

This is just a temporary 1st impression using Marksman up to lv 16/100.

So far, for me at least, this is the best TD game I have ever played. An insane amount of character and trap customization. Char customization comes from exp levels and loot whereas trap customization comes from gaining trap points from completing new stages, completing quests, passives from character skill points, and char gear. There could be more than I know about because I am only lv 16/100 on Marksman. Multiple Marksman can be spec'd completely differently so it adds a lot to co-op even if players are the same class. There is also trap synergizing going on. Lots of it! I will write a more detailed review once i have experienced more of the game.

Bottomline.....if you like Tower Defence games then there is a lot to love here. More than I currently can comprehend.

So far I have died 20 times playing Bionic Comando and another 10 prepping my underwater lair. That is 30 GOOD deaths in under 3 hours! I will gladly die again. If you were a fan of previous Bionic Comando games you will love this one 100x times more! I do not know why people keep comparing a great 3D Bionic Commando to Minecraft. It's mind boggling!
