I've played this game MANY MANY times before and today I bought it on Steam as the summer sale gave it a discount. I decided to do a review on the Steam's version.

1. A large plus for story telling. If Mafia was a movie or a mini-series it would definetly be far far up there with movies like Goodfellas, Casino and Donnie Brasco. I am not mentioning The Godfather as that movie in my opinion isn't even about La Cosa Nostra. Back to the game though...

2. It is amazing how Daniel Vavra (who worked on Mafia 2 and made Kingdom Come : Deliverance) paid attention to detail and immersion. I have seen a lot of people complain about one of the first missions where all you do is drive a clunky taxi around, transporting passengers to point A to point B. I understand this would irritate any person out there and make them think ''If there's one more passenger I'll smash my keyboard to pieces'' but it's a piece of immersion. How? Well, in real life jobs are difficult (most of them) and this mission shows how Tom felt every single day working hard as a taxi driver and after completing several rides we feel the same way so it is a relief when Tom actually joins the mob and action starts rolling in.

3. I believe it's a crime against humanity that majority of soundtrack was removed for the Steam version. In most, if not all, games the soundtrack makes a huge difference and Mafia is no exception, it plays music from the time period it is based on and it gives extra immersion, yet somewhy the soundtrack was removed. I guess it's due to copyrights and all?

4. All of the missions have something to tell and I never felt bored on any single mission. If I had to pick the worst mission in the game I'd go for the racing one. In 1930s racing cars were hard to properly control and the game's mechanics do not help it a ton so it's very very hard to complete that one mission, but after that, everything goes back to normal.

5. There were some aesthetic changes made for the Steam version and I noticed them right away, but they do not make the game any better or worse.

6. The gunplay is fairly easy when you get ahold of it but in my opinion shootouts were never the main focus of this game.

7. It is definetly an underrated classic. I can see that on Steam this has Very Positive reviews but there are only 1103 of them at the moment and I think there really should be a larger playerbase despite it being released on Steam not that long ago. Yes, the graphics are a little dated but this is a 2002 game. I think it was the time GTA III and Vice City were being released just so you can compare graphics. A lot of people take ''madness'' over storylines and Mafia was tossed into GTA's shadow.

In conclusion, I'd absolutely recommend this classic. It's only 6.69EUR now during summer sale and 9.99EUR original price. Considering the price this is definetly packs a bang for your buck. While the majority of soundtrack is removed and the racing mission will make you pull your hair out, everything else beats the negative side completely.
