I'm persisting with this game, because it provides something I personally want, and can't otherwise get. But there's something you need to know. The AI cheats. You'll waste hours thinking you need a better team, or better fields, or better tactics. But no. You can play the exact same game with the exact same teams at the exact same time, from both sides, and the AI will take wickets every over, and score sixes at will. It's not you, it's this effing game. Feel completely free to sim and save scum until the outcome is fair.

I've played this for 300 hours, and I don't think I've finished yet, so it's not all bad. It just seems to enjoy ruining the gameplay experience far too much. Of course permadeath comes with the territory, but that's not how you feel when your level 20 favourite croaks. Just trying out non-permadeath mode, and contract glotrot at level 16. Ruins the save. Cure quests are far too intricate to be fun, while constantly contaminating all your water. I've avoided wikis largely, but I now suggest they contain details that should be in the game. I also recommend you watch let's plays before you buy (as I did). I bet it's way more jarring when you've no idea what to expect.

I do like this game, although it has its flaws.
Pros:
I just love roster management games
The narration and the writing are up there with the very best
The graphical backdrops are beautiful and suit the Lovecraftian tone of the game very well
Cons:
All the graphics are ultra-2D, and what animations there are are gratuitously limited
I find many of the 'heroes' and virtually all the monsters to be inappropriately ugly. Obviously the ravening critters are meant to be as scary as possible, but the ugliness is unnecessary and, to me, wrong.
There are plenty of Let's Plays on Youtube and Twitch, so check a few out, both to help you decide, and, if you don't mind minor spoilers, so you don't find it too difficult when you start playing. It is rogue-like in the sense that save-scumming is not permitted (there may be an option but it's not in the spirit of the game), so party wipes and abandoned quests can be devastating and can even render a save untenable if you run out of money or bodies.
