Rewriting my review to be slightly more positive. It was originally posted before much simpler server hosting was possible, making it incredibly difficult to enjoy with friends.

Now, hosting for friends is as simple as using steam matchmaking, and I can absolutely say Barotrauma is utterly amazing when you're experiencing the game as intended. Playing and cooperating with friends is a truly amazing experience that I would absolutely recommend to anyone even remotely interested in the experience.

But, with an incredibly large BUT

I have yet to attempt the public multiplayer of this game again since my original review. Barotrauma is instantly, and horribly soiled by people who simply don't intend to "play" the game. In public lobbies it was easy for the entire sub to be busted and broken beyond repair within five minutes of the match starting, making all but the rarest of matches an utter slog to attempt playing, even if the sub manages to get a few hundred meters from the starting dock.

However, the game has received several updates since the review (obviously), and apparently received a "karma" system of sorts that i have yet to look into, which if it can even slightly combat the horrifying occurrences in the average public lobby is a massive improvement. I will further edit my review after (hopefully) understanding the karma system, and seeing if it improves public matches

Overall, Barotrauma is a seriously amazing game with an insanely unique experience, but I hesitate to recommend it to any solo player at full price as of yet. With a group of trusty friends, however? ABSOLUTELY give this game a look and try. The price point is quite hefty if you're looking at it as a solo player (Bots still don't seem to be comparable to a single player). But if a small (or large) group of friends own the game and have room for you, the purchase would be absolutely worth it.

As of writing the review, the game sits at a hefty discount, at which point i would absolutely suggest purchasing the game even as a solo player if you hold some interest in the game even with my uncertainty in the public lobbies as of now. (If public lobbies are still iffy, spectating them might atleast provide some good entertainment!)


A sort of half-TLDR: If you can secure even a small group of friends, this game is utterly incredible to play. As a solo player I am still unsure if the game is worth its relatively high pricepoint, but if you can catch the game on a solid sale and are interested enough, I can still recommend giving it a go.

Its like Dying Light without the parkour, fun combat, alright story, fun main character, appealing graphics and alot of other things!
