I'm surprised no one else has made a game along these lines yet- Peggle was massively popular and a ton of fun, and I think this is the first game that scratches that same itch. That being said, there's a long way to go.

I think currently the game needs a lot more content for it's price point- at least double and maybe even triple what's currently included. I feel like I've seen everything in eight hours of playing, and the repetitive encounters are starting to get a little boring. The content in the game currently also needs to be balanced- even with just a few runs it's clear that some of the orbs and relics are far more powerful than the others (the boss relics are particularly discordant- three of them are incredibly broken and the other six are just kind of okay).

The game is in early access and the devs have shown they're receptive to feedback and have been making balance changes, so I'm hopeful that they'll be adding a lot more in the days to come. However, if you're not a *huge* fan of peggle/pachinko, the price tag might be a little high for you.

I think this game is the single best metroidvania made in every single aspect. The exploration is incredible and complex; there were three or four times during my first playthrough where I though I had found everything there was and then stumbled into a *massive* new area- there's nothing like that feeling. The combat is tight and polished with a lot of options for how to build your playstyle, and plenty of challenges for those of you who love difficult fights. To top it all off, the atmosphere is unbelievable and original, and Christopher Larkin's score is phenomenal.

This is the best game in the past ten years, and for fifteen dollars it's a steal.

Slay the Spire is, without a doubt, one of the most smoothly polished gaming experiences I've ever had the pleasure of playing. I'm a fan of deck-building games, but CCGs like Magic and Hearthstone overwhelmed me with the variety of choice and constantly changing metas, not to mention a hefty pay-to-win. Slay the Spire scratches that itch with an incredible level of balance, variety, and challenge. With four fantastic characters that all play differently, hundreds of cards and items, and twenty difficulty levels, I've just begun to scratch the surface at 100 hours. It's a great bang for your buck, and I highly recommend it.

Baba is You is one of the best puzzle games I've played in years- maybe the best one ever. For a game made by a single developer, it shows an incredible amount of depth and complexity. I feel like it shines the most in the later levels, once several concepts are thrown together and the player is allowed to mix them together and see what works well. My only complaint about the game is that a handful of solutions were so out of left field the only way I ever would have thought of them is to mess around until I accidentally stumbled upon them (which happened on more than one instance). If you've got a friend who enjoys puzzle games, I would actually suggest playing through with them. Having a second person to bounce ideas off of really helped me out and made the experience a lot more fun than on my own, when I could be stumped for over an hour on a single level.

It took me less than two hours to finish Donut County and they were two of the most fun hours I've had playing a video game in years.

TL;DR: As a concept, Owlboy is a wonderful idea, with goregous graphics and music, a mostly engaging storyline and decent characters, and some nice lore, but is held back by clunky controls, flat level design, and frustruating difficulty spikes.

Pros:
-The game looks absolutely amazing, as you can probably see, and there's an incredible amount of detail put into every portion of the game that is absolutely stunning to watch.
-A killer soundtrack, with themes that fit each area effectively. Consistently kept me engaged.
-Interesting characters with good development over the course of the story, and a pretty good story, though there were a few weak points partway through the game.
-Really interesting and well thought out lore for those who seek it out, though I may just be a sucker for a deep background.

♥♥♥♥:
-The control scheme never really clicked for me. Playing with a mouse and keyboard was a little bit awkward for movement and switching through characters, and for whatever reason, I couldn't get controller support to work (DS4 on a Mac).
-The game had some really sudden difficulty spikes, with a handfull of bosses being key factors, as well as that stupid cannon minigame.
-Collecting all the coins was tedious (you'll certainly miss one pot or two and have to spend a while scanning a whole level to get everything) and it felt like there wasn't much reward for progression.
-For whatever reason, it couldn't go fullscreen for me, which caused issues a couple times.
-Price tag is a bit high for the length of the game.

I'm disappointed that I didn't enjoy this game as much as I thought I would since I really enjoyed watching the game develop over the course of so many years, but at some point it just stopped being fun and I was only finishing it to say I did. There were parts of the game that I absolutely loved, but there were just as many parts that I had to push myself to get through. Nonetheless, I think D-Pad studios has a great debut, and I look forward to seeing what they learn from this in their future games.
