Danganronpa continues to be a pillar of the detective-mystery genre with its latest entry, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. It continues to innovate with ever more expressive characters, art, sprites, music, and action gameplay that put its visual-novel peers to shame.
The story is radical, with twists and turns that will enrapture newcomers and veterans to the franchise alike. In it, familiar and subversive tropes intermingle delightfully to deliver nostalgia and surprise in healthy measure.

Action gameplay in a visual novel may be frustrating to those who enjoy thinking carefully through a mystery in peace. Time limits and mechanical challenges will put pressure on you to come up with the right answer quickly. The atmosphere is eerie, and some sprites and story developments will creep you out. I played the original Danganronpa with a friend late at night, and by the end of the first case I was in a nervous sweat. Squeamish players may struggle similarly after certain sections.

But I take that as a sign that the game has me engaged. I was constantly unable to distance myself from the feelings of the characters (the fourth wall breaks don't help). If that's the sort of feeling you're looking for in a game, I can't recommend this one enough.
