It's awful. it's slow. It's clunky. It's boring.

minor jump scares. zero tension

its a weird game. One of those games where a "meh" button is necessary.

Ultimately this is a detective game. the gameplay loop is nice. Find clues, form a deduction. essentially a glorified point and click.

But then it starts locking you into this linear story and you can't even slow it down. I arrived in this samurai game world for example and got unceremoniously thrown from it without making a deduction because the story tellers decided it was time and not because I was done.

And it's not the first time.

I know most games have linear story telling but never in my life have I felt so rail roaded by a computer game.

I'd rate it a 4/10. maybe buy it if you like cyber punk/ point and click adventures and it's cheap but otherwise I'd avoid.

Edit:

I would like to respond to the devs.

I do apprecate the time taken to reply. The setting is very well done and I did enjoy the first detective mission thoroughly. The writing was actually very good and would give it an 8/10 and the progression was ok although I felt that it could have used some improvement but generally speaking was a very good system. My issues became more with the railroading later on that you see in the samurai world for example where I felt I was rushed through so much. certain parts of the game you are not allowed to explore or just finish to quickly. The story jumps forward in leaps and bounds and you are dragged along.

I am not sad that I bought the product I may add. I said I wish there was a meh button, that itself means it wasn't necessarily bad. It simply rubbed me the wrong way. Others may enjoy it.

@JennaJ commented on the game having multiple endings yet when I mean railroaded, I meant that parts of the story progressed and you had no choice but to follow. In the samurai world for example, you get drawn into the weird coloured tree puzzle which leads to the "mystical tree" part of the game and then you have to solve that...I hadn't even barely used the forge function for example in the samurai world before I was unceremoniously ripped from it and told "the story goes this way" and in that way I was railroaded. I can never explore that world. the game progressed whether I wanted it to or not and I was thrown into that story against my will. "YOU WILL LEAVE AND DO THIS PART OF THE STORY NOW" the game screamed at me. The story has multiple endings based on your deductions but it's ultimately the same path to these slightly variations in ending. I would say it cleverly disguises the railroading by having a facade of "choices matter".

A short game, I finished it in just under 9 hours. Worth every penny.

Take a journey through medievil france as the de rune family encounters hardship. follow a phenomenal story (that I do not want to ruin) that ends in a perfect climax!

the game revolves around sneaking around guards etc and solving puzzles to get to the next area. The puzzles are rewarding when solved and the sneaking isn't tedious in the slightest, quite fun actually.

the story however....this needs to become a movie or a series. it would work perfectly!

Big recommend. so glad I picked it up on a whim!

It's hard to recommend this game. The first half is beautiful. the story is fun and the characterization is phenomenal. essentially a bromancy road trip with interesting combat and world. Loved it!

and then the plot kicks in. and its mega weird and it makes no f'ing sense. and you sorta lose interest so it sits on the back burner then you sort of forget how to play and realise you won't ever finish it but you don't care regardless

A game's plot shouldn't be this hard to get. I don't wanna watch animes or buy dlc.

Its a soft no for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the first half and if you love ff xv you might just like it

Having just completed it, all I can say is that this game was just beautiful, not just the art but the story. Don't let the cuteness fool you, this one hurts you right in the feels.

An amazing, simple resource management game and base building set in an amazing story complete with beautiful art and music. the game was like a masterpiece in zen relaxation and I would recommend it to anyone.

For many of us, we will have come to griftlands as a result of looking for something to fill the space of slay the spire.

I don't think comparing the two is entirely fair, although they are both deckbuilders that is where the similarities end I feel.

I prefered this game. Great story, multiple paths through it (even some random hidden ones if you befriend the right person). Tons of replayability both on the story end and on the deckbuilding side.

The deckbuilding is not as deep as slay the spire for sure but what it lacks in deckbuilding it makes up for in thematic mechanics and story. There are two decks, the negotiation and the fighting deck. the negotiation battles are fantastic, as you set up arguments (buffs) and destroy your opponents arguments while attacking their core argument to win the game. Call in favours, gain favour or use brute force and hostility to win your way through negotiations, come up against someone scarier than you and you may find you need to resort to sweet talking. Play the know it all card and gain extra actions while leaving yourself vulnerable to a string counter argument.

There are 3 main stories (2 you must unlock but it is relatively easy) and the stories though simplistic are fantastic. choose your side, your faction, your friends and your enemies. murder people in alleyways or show mercy and gain a friend as you fight to achieve your final objective and beat the game

I would say it is a lot easier (so far, I haven't tried the harder runs yet) than slay the spire. deck building is a lot more easy and intuitive and the combos are clear and obvious. But I kinda like it. it's less focused on a few key cards like slay the spire can be sometimes and more on the overall style of the deck. Want a burn deck? just collect burn cards. Want an energy charge up attack deck? collect those cards.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the game and it has been worth every penny.6 hours in and I haven't even finished the 2nd story, I see me playing this for a while

I am writing this review as someone who has never played a tales game before.

I just beat tales of symphonia and it was....good and bad. I would say 6/10

It takes the classic formula of a jrpg and adds a nice, real time battle system to it . The gameplay is fun and simple enough to get the hang of yet takes time to master. The progression throughout the game means not much grinding is required. the levelling system/ tech system is alright. nothing innovative. "use x move 50 times to unlock y". the whole T/S made not much sense and I ignored it pretty much and still made it to the end with no real difficulty. This game will not challenge you (maybe the end game content...but even then is grinding a challenge? Not for me thanks)

Now, many on here who are fans of the story i feel are looking at this through nostalgic glasses. The story starts of like your classic jrpg trope boy from village on path tp save the world. But from this it goes down a series of extremely convoluted paths and obvious tropes . Add a few twists in you could see coming a mile away. Add that to the last 20% of the game where I had NO idea what was going on by the end and it gets the story wrapped up by even more bs that I honestly had to google for an explanation. (which even though was honestly unsatisfactory)

Some of the writing is cringe inducing honestly. it is a dated game though and it is forgiven and on the whole the writing was decent enough. A very nice moral story that they sometimes take a stick and beat you with. But I liked the message at least

You can play it again on a sort of new game +...but why would you . it does have endgame content but beyond a couple of bosses and an arena, there is nothing else really to do.

Still I would recommend it on sale I suppose. It fixed an itch and for the first 80% of the game I was having fun. The ending though...sheesh....just run through it. its not like you won't absolutely smash every boss with zero effort anyway.

I'd say 6/10 maybe? I do want to try another tales game though, I think this installment has laid some serious groundwork done and I can see why the future installments are spoken highly of. I wanted to start at the beginning.
