game is more fun than it has any right to be. fairly well balanced tho i think some classes are easier than others. great when you just need to decompress for 15 minutes

after getting really deep into the game once you hit diamond it's like hitting a brick wall. you won't see anything in the store you want and it's not untypical to lose 5 games in a row and dropping 30-40 points back into plat, then win back up to diamond with ease, then lose it all once more.

seems to be some weird thing going on with ranks and what's offered in store.

edit. another 20 hours in diamond and i just can't anymore. the game stopped being fun. 60 hours of playtime for 12 bucks means i have to recommend the game though. i kinda wish i could hit a button and reset everything back to bronze and actually have fun again.

fantastic indie game that feels like a top down terraria. Hoping the game keeps growing the same rate terraria did. Thoroughly enjoyed the play-through.

"Honore Ze balzac!" Because as a huge fan of the first one... this game is ball(z)ac for sure. This feels like a DLC. Graphics look 6 years old. Game runs clunky on PC. I expected a lot more from a 2024 sequel to one of my favorite games of all time. Granted i have a lot more to see and do, but the initial impressions are pretty poor, and that's usually where developers show their best stuff.

You can even hear it in their interviews. "this is our vision of what we wanted Dragons Dogma to be." Feels like a revamped 1. not something new.

Game is super fun. It's everything that pokemon needed to make it fun for me. Building, guns, automation.

It is definitely early access. There's some major bugs in the game, mostly visible by the time you hit end game.
multiplayer is a laggy mess. and my main gripe... the percent chance to catch is massively bugged. Xcom levels of hilarity failing a 90% chance 20 times in a row. I have a feeling there's something coded in there if there's lag it just lets the pal out... unless the % shown is just an outright lie.

that aside, having a ton of fun with the occasional wanna throw controller.

i've pretty much finished everything there is to do. bred the best pals, got the best weapons and armor, beat all the bosses. 100+ hours of playtime is pretty damn good for 30 bucks.

some extra minor gripes - things like the forgetting medicine taking over an hour to craft with the best medicine pal in the upgraded med box with the cauldron. that kind of thing is nuts.

dedicated servers still crash stupid often no matter what settings you use and it causes some haywire with pal AI.

All that said, i certainly got my money worth and enjoyed my time in the game. maybe come back in a year or two when there's a lot more content.

I'm preserving the below, as it may come up again and players should realize the type of company they're going to have to deal with if they buy this game. The Nitrado deal still really stinks, they're the worst private server hosting company that exists. But they did back down on self hosting. They've made patches and fixed memory leaks on servers. I haven't had any actual issues in game running a 2080 super and an i7 8700 with 32gb ddr4 ram. for now, changing to positive.

In true wildcard/snail fashion, it's not even the game that's the issue, which don't get me wrong, there are plenty of in game issues... just look at the other reviews.
They've done everything in their power to piss players off.
First they promised the game would be free, then bundled it, then not. we got over it but still a crappy move.
Then, Private servers were what MADE Ark Survival playable. They've all but killed the ability to host a server cluster yourself and gave Nitrado, of all companies, exclusivity for private hosting. They'd be one of my last choices for a choice like this. Forcing dedicated communities to shift their servers to an unpopular option is not the way to make your player base happy.
Add all that to the secretive nature of this launch, tells me they knew people would be pissed and hid it so people would buy it as soon as it came out before discovering the layers of crap they shoveled on.

hoping the above changes, or will likely be refunding.

Few bugs, but overall, the D&D experience I wanted.
I loved Solasta but this blows it out of the water. This is simply the game of the decade. Truly a labor of love from a studio that hasn't given in to crappy game practices.

Basically, this is a better Valheim. It has the same issues, as stated by the top negative review, of being horribly grindy and not solo friendly. but it's quite fun with friends, and the combat is infinitely better than valheim. the resources are also not so rare as to be annoying.

Edit for release:
Many things have changed in the last year and I edited my review below to remove some of the issues i had with the game.

Currently the major flaws I have are the ability to reroll and the monolith system.
Once you choose your subclass, you're stuck. I can't make a bladedancer then decide i wanna switch them over to a marksman. having to have 4 different rogues in my character list is insane. respeccing is a core concept of arpg's in 2024.

This falls into the monolith system as well considering it is not shared with the account but is unique per character. The main gripe is that it takes hundreds of hours to work up your monolith corruption. Then you decide to play a new character and have to do it all over again? No one wants to grind twice. Monolith progress should be shared on the account and corruption level should be a slider choice that you can choose when starting a monolith so lower level characters on the account aren't forced to run 800 corruption immediately, but could run 200 if they can handle it.

Due to the above, the endgame system is currently just subpar compared to the arpg standards out today. Given time, i'm sure this will change.

Despite all that, the bones are good, and your first character will bring you great enjoyment. well worth the money I've spent. I just dont' see myself spending 4000 hours on this game until they change some of the above features.

Old Review:

Last Epoch has some great points to it, and some drawbacks that seem like they'll be solved in time.
First off, I'm an APRG vet, with almost 4k total hours in POE (stand alone client and steam) and uncountable in D1/D2. Last Epoch I would describe as somewhere in between.

Pros:
*I found it a fantastic break from the non stop grind and headache that POE has become, and the limited (but still vastly more than diablo) skill tree choices are a welcome break and feel fresh.

*enjoying the skill tree customization. it's smooth and intuitive and vastly superior to diablo level. And doesn't need a whole other program like POE to figure out.

*The combat feels good. Much slower than POE, but faster than Diablo.

*Game also plays well and looks good in ultrawide.

*Music is decent

*Gameplay feels smooth

*they have set items!

*The Forge. This is a great addition. it's not so complicated you need 2 doctorate degrees like POE crafting, but it's extremely useful and interesting.

The negatives:

*The graphics are okay. they feel a little dated, but for some reason even with these outdated graphics, the game sends my video card into higher temps than current AAA games. Very un-optimized i'd say.

*there is no going back to town once you enter a map. if you die, or leave. it's done. you gotta start over, and you've lost your bonus.
