I really wanted to like Splitgate, but I'm not sure I can.

It's a fresh take on the genre, and portals are fun! For the casual player that's just interested in the more arcade-y gamemodes I'd give this game 2 big ol thumbs up :)

If you're more into the competitive side of splitgate, however, I think you're gonna be pretty disappointed.

First off, hitboxes in this game feel HUGE. It's effortless to land shots on people who aren't more than 10 yards away, and the quick time to kill means you're gonna have a lotta deaths where there's genuinely nothing you could've done about it. Movement speed, both on the ground and in the air, is slower than it feels it should be for a game like this, and the pitifully small benefit you get from crouching means if someone gets the drop on you, its GG.

Portals are a lotta fun, though, and pulling off multikills on entire squads with a sneaky roof portal is just about the best experience I've had in a shooter in recent years.

So why, then, do the ranked game modes discourage creative portal usage? The two gamemodes in the premiere 4v4 ranked playlist are king of the hill and domination, which both ask you to do something really boring: stand in one place. Because of this, ranked games tend to devolve into one team hiding in corners on the point staring at a doorway, using their portals to cover the walls so their opponents can't get creative. While this isn't necessarily unfun, it's also not the fast-paced, high-octane portal gameplay I was looking forward to.

Here's a question: How many times have you used the huge portal platforms at the bottom of the map to do anything that couldn't have been better accomplished with a faster, "boring" portal in half the time?

In general, maps are simply too small and too claustrophobic to get much strategic value out of the flashier maneuvers.

They're certainly fun to pull off, though.

I guess to close out this ramble, there's a lotta good ideas here that I think make for a game that's genuinely a ton of fun. It seems like it's been forever since a game like this has reached any amount of mass popularity, and I'm sure I'll be hoppin on with some friends for fun times messing around in the casual modes. As far as ranked is concerned, though, I think there's just not enough depth as the game currently stands to draw me away from any of the competition.

If there was a "so-so" opinion I could give, I would. But seeing as I can't do that, I'll have to say I don't recommend this game to anyone looking to find a deep, fulfilling shooter with satisfying design and complex game mechanics.

2000 hours in and I can say with certainty that this may be the most addicting game I have ever played... EVER.
