An accessible yet engaging roguelike deckbuilder.

It's easy for its genre; the game is balanced around a relatively limited pool of permanent health, so it's intended that you can reliably achieve near-perfect fights as long as you have a decent build going, and the impact of RNG is pretty tame. Despite this, there's enough going on that it's quite satisfying to keep working out answers to what's flying at you turn after turn, and the max difficulty was enough for me to start losing for my mistakes.

On top of a fair selection of ships with unique mechanics, your choice of characters each run and the synergies between them impact your deckbuilding options significantly and keep things fresh. Opinions seem mixed here, but I've found there to be a healthy variety of possible builds - more than enough for me to get my money's worth out of the game without any staleness. Could you beat the story by making a shield tank deck with Dizzy 18 times? Probably... but Cobalt Core doesn't ask much from you to be able to make your own fun with it. Add on fabulous music, clean visuals, and entertaining characterization throughout and between runs, and you have quite a nice comfort game among deckbuilders.

Early Access Review
A great game that fans of XCOM or more classic games of the genre will probably enjoy. Your agents are skilled, your moves tactical, and your mistakes deadly. The game is a little punishing, but if you can tolerate permadeath and are willing to risk it all for the occasional awesome moment, you won't be dissappointed.
