Solid 6/10 game; if you can nab it for cheap enough (20$ range) it's worth it.

Pros. - 1: Combat is pretty clean and the Conditions + Reactors system feels very intuitive and flows well. They make for pretty great resource management and are engaging! 2: The enemy, environment and sound designs are all cohesive and the music compliments them all well enough. 3: The weapons are very fun and satisfying with some unique modifiers, especially in the Ranged Weapons.

Cons. - 1: There's not /enough/ combat and once you've beaten the game, that's it; the grind is unsatisfying and there's little reason to farm anything out other than those last few achievements. Start a new character and go again with different setups because there's no end game or post game whatsoever. 2: Maps are way too big with enemies spread out too thin, especially so in certain areas and what feels about half of the game. There's no way to quickly warp to checkpoints, so you have to physically go /all the way/ to them every time, making Farming Routes incredibly tedious due to how LARGE the maps are with no mobility options other than backstep spamming. 3: The crafting/looting are straight up bad and the UI is counter intuitive which makes navigating the menus clunky. Don't spend valuable rarer mats on Tier 1 and Tier 2 armors because those stats do not transition into their stronger versions, which the game does not indicate whatsoever.

Overall, I enjoy the game; it's got some strong points, but said points get overshadowed by poor game design in quite a few areas. Story is pretty basic but the written Lore 'journals' flesh it out just enough to have my approval. Would love to see the good parts of this game expanded on and given a lot more replay value similar to Nioh.

Muck.

In all seriousness, though, the game is free, it's fun, it's silly and you can enjoy it in many different ways.

Its Roguelike + Survival gameplay loop can get one hooked on the game for an extended amount of time or be treated as a casual pick up and play game. The multiplayer experience seems fruitful as well, leaving plenty of replay value for something so simple. There's no investment into the game other than what one's own drive can create, be it achievement hunting, making challenges or just messing around!

All in all, I suggest picking this up, messing around, and finding some friends to play with eventually. Mess around more, and then just. Play it whenever one would want. One might get hooked, one might find the fun short lived, but there's nothing lost in at least trying it a few times!

Thanks for the game, Dani, and its few quality updates.

Now go check out and wishlist KARLSON on Steam :)

I'll keep this quick, much like the game. Risk of Rain is in my opinion an amazingly fun, fast paced side scrolling, shoot 'em up, beat them down, pixel art styled game with plenty of appealing game mechanics, rogue like aspects and lore to keep you having fun for a good while /on your own/. If you can manage to get some friends to play with /without/ lag issues out the ass, you're in for the ride of your life. This game will make you laugh, it will make you cry. You'll feel accomplished at times after barely scruffing it out with a boss, and other times you'll feel like you had no chance, overwhelmed, humbled and defeated.

Risk of Rain will make you cry, either out of joy or pure dismay. Each play through is livened up by the randomly generated items, and you'll find some are great on their own to rely on while others need to synergize with certain other items. Overall, it is a great game, and it has 10 characters to choose from. Each character, might I add, has completely different play styles from the others in my opinion, and I honestly can't say one is /better/ than the other.

Overall, I give it 9 and a half Screes out of 10, because holy hot hell and damn this game is amazing and I love the artwork, atmosphere and do not even get me STARTED on the music soundtrack. If they touched up a few issues I have with the game (glitches, lag issues, and muliplayer achievement bugs) then it'd easily be a 10/10.
