Early Access Review
After 300 hours I'm still finding new things every time I play. If you enjoy traditional roguelikes like DCSS or CDDA then you need to give this a try. The character customization here is insane. Some of my favorite builds:
  • A two-headed, teleporting, clairvoyant, time-bending, sword master
  • A multi-legged axe-wielding merchant who can walk through walls
  • A duel-wielding cyborg with back-mounted laser guns, translucent skin, tank treads for legs, and the implanted knowledge of high-tier grenade crafting.
  • A character who can split into 8 copies of themselves with the ability to create all-consuming spacetime vortexes who has an evil twin with the same powers so that every time they meet they split into 16 clones who then shred apart the entire map and everyone in it with their never-ending spacetime vortex war. (Also they can travel backward in time to pick between multiple timelines... I swear I'm not making this up).
Inspired by Gamma World, the setting and fiction is scattered in descriptions of items, places, and people you examine. The looting system is excellent; there's nothing better than digging 20 floors deep into a ruin, finding another "weird artifact" and identifying it as some insanely powerful weapon or tool.

The devs update and improve the game on a weekly basis. Yesterday I found a bug and sent a copy of my save to the support team, it was fixed a few hours later. It's obvious they care a great deal about this game and it's totally worth your time to try it out.

In Wadjet's usual style this feels like a throwback to the LucasArts SCUMM engine games like Full Throttle, Monkey Island, or Indiana Jones. Good voice acting and an interesting story made this entertaining enough to play through twice. If you like the adventure genre anything by Wadjet Eye Games is a safe bet.

My favorite game by far. The mechanics are excellent. The combat is fast-paced and frantically fun. There are many great maps in both the base game and on the Steam workshop. The community is for the most part very respectful and tolerant regardless of skill.

In all honesty though this game is not for everyone. New players may have a rough time if they're joining random games. A skilled player can easily trounce newer players and it's tough to learn how to play when your opponents kill you in 2 seconds. The player count is down from Duck Game's heyday so sometimes it takes a few minutes to join a random matchup, but if you add players you enjoy fighting against you can get a match going at any time. If you have friends who'd be interested in playing, this is a must buy.

If you're willing to die a lot and can handle losing matches when you start out, Duck Game will reward with you the most satisfying gameplay in the genre. I've gotten more laughs and amazing moments out of Duck Game than anything I've played in my 25 years of gaming. My friends list is filled with over 180 ducks I've met over the 3 years I've been playing. I always find myself coming back to Duck Game because nothing else compares with the humor, intensity, and skillful gaming to be had here.

I fully and wholeheartedly recommend Duck Game. There's a reason so many players have hundreds or thousands of hours invested. It's amazingly fun, and enjoyably challenging. Also there's a dedicated button for quacking. Who could resist?

UPDATE 10/19:
It's been a year since I wrote the review and this game is still awesome. Can still find a good game any night of the week. Still a lot of active players. Still recommending it.
