If you like space and the sandbox experience this game is for you. The first experience docking and leaving a station will leave you wanting more, until you see the next price tag that is. I bought this game from FD a year ago for $75. I didn't complain when it was released and the price dropped a little from what I paid (went from $60 to $40 I believe), after all I like to think a portion of what I paid actually went to making the game. With this expansion, I now have a problem. As a veteran player I can purchase the expansion for 25% off, a "loyalty discount" as they call it. That makes the expansion $45, which is cool. What is not cool is the base game going for $20 and expansion going for $60. A brand new player can buy both for $80. That's $5 more than I paid for just the base game. Now I have to spend another $45 to purchase the expansion so I can play the content that I can only assume was made using the money I gave them, since little to nothing was implemented in terms of content that I can remember since I purchased it. I, as a "loyal player" end up shelling out $120 total to get $80 worth of game.

Think it won't happen again next year? I prediction, the base game going for $15, Horizons will be $20 and next expansion will be $60. New players get everything for $95, existing players get everything for $180 (maybe $160 if they continue the "loyalty discount").

My suggestion, get the base game. You'd be a fool not to. Just don't spring for the expansion until FD figure out how to actually reward people who help pay for their game instead of making us pay even more to enjoy the game that we helped fund.
