In 2018 I went on a local very popular Halloween Trail with my sister. The idea was that there were scary makeup-clad horror icons all throughout the trail who would jumpscare you in the dark. The issue was that there were so many people at the trail that it became a total shuffle-along, everyone just followed the person in front of them. The only people who were "scared" were the women there with their strong boyfriends, the mass of people sucked any joy to be had out of the trail.
And then came along a fork in the road. The trail moved clockwise circling back to the beginning- a signpost pointing to the left said "Easy Scare" while the right said "Hard Fright", everyone shuffled along onto the right with Hard Fright, the left path was completely empty, nobody wanted the 'Easy' experience. In a moment that I will remember for the rest of my life I took the left path. I figured if it was either a dead end or a bathroom or, with a little bit of luck, the same main trail that everyone seemed to pass on by, preferring the Horde Shuffle infront of them. Instead of a bathroom, I encountered the greatest scares of any Halloween then or since. Kids dressed as spiders came snarling and appeared out of every dark nook and cranny and descended onto the trail. Slashers were breaking through maze walls seemingly to get to me, it was fantastic.
I never would have experienced this if I had trusted in the Shuffling Horde of people. A man following the next man in front of him believing that somewhere further through the Horde there's real happiness is, I think, the greatest failing of humanity. Nobody lied to anyone else, the people on that trail missed out and they only have themselves to blame. I think that applies to Life in a greater sense as well.
I've learned my lesson. I have since then no longer valued materialism nor experiences that are only great because other people think they're SUPPOSED TO BE great. In our modern world; getting educated, getting a college degree so you can get a job so you can make money to provide for a family who you will then pass everything onto when you die is the modern day Horde Shuffle. No Government manipulated people to think and act this way, people have done it to themselves, and while the Horde is not always wrong (above all else those choices are the 'safest' ones), they won't always give you much joy in life and more often than not, you'll find yourself feeling a faux-joy because you're 'supposed' to enjoy that Shuffle even though nobody really does.

Sometimes I see this Shuffle in video games with an in-game currency to grind for. I hope my friends who Shuffle along take the Easy Scare path someday.
