I was actually one of the first people to pre-order this game's Supporter Edition on March 5th 2013 and so far the game evolved from a 7-8/10 military shooter with emphasis on realism to a 12/10 Military Simulator, the probably best mod support of any game currently on the market and an extensive community that happily accepts new players.

If you're searching for realistic military operations in a videogame, ArmA is for you.
If you're searching for some open world roleplaying or general TVT action, ArmA is for you.
If you would like to be part of a group that conducts CO-OP and/or TVT missions together, ArmA is for you.

Additionally one very huge part of this game is the mod support, literally anything you can imagine ranging from fictional spaceships to realistically modeled Main Battle Tanks as well as all accompanying features can be downloaded and used in game, just a few mods I would recommend checking out:

JSRS 3 Dragonfyre, the successor to the very popular JSRS2 for ArmA3 and the previous JSRS for ArmA2, this soundmod delivers a high fidelity, realism oriented sound environment, I would strongly recommend checking out a few videos on the official JSRS studio's youtube channel, if you didn't know that it's a mod for a videogame you would probably think that the sounds are part of actual combat footage, that's the fidelity you can expect from JSRS.

Blastcore Phoenix, JSRS is for sounds, Blastcore Phoenix is for visuals, Blastcore Phoenix which is also currently in developement is the successor of the very popular Blastcore mods for ArmA2 and ArmA3, this mod delivers realistic high quality explosion and smoke effects while still maintaining good ingame performance, if you want to check this mod out, make sure that you're specificially searching for Blastcore Phoenix as the new mod is quite a lot different from the old ones.

RHS Escalation, this mod is actually split up into two mods and has been released only a couple of days ago, it brings very high quality, contemporary Russian and American assets into the game including, vehicles, weapons and uniforms, despite the mod being in a very early stage at version 0.30 it already has considerably more content than the main game, this mod is definitely worth being checked out.

Authentic Gameplay Modification, this mod could be regarded as the successor for the Advanced Combat Environment 1 and 2 modifications for ArmA2, they take this game from being somewhat beginner friendly and while already very realistic to a Simulation that may be mistaken with VBS, the military training simulator developed by a sub company of Bohemia Interactive, this mod may not be for everyone but if you're looking for the most realistic military experience that can be delivered by a game, this mod is definitely worth checking out

Advanced Combat Radio Environment or Task Force Arrowhead Radio, these two mods which actually could be considered rivals provide the game with very realistic communication in form of an overhauled VON and simulated real world radio models they also come with a very high fidelity UI, they achieve all this by using a teamspeak plugin.

The TL:DR of this would be: Should you get ArmA? Yes.
