Some very cool concepts for this genre marred by predatory FOMO content and disgusting one-shots designed for maximum waste of your time. You have to pay real money to do quests. Most of the content drops are temporary events without any sort of safety net for the horrendous 0.01% drop chance item grind. Items from these temporary events are getting more and more powerful, so it would really suck to miss out on these items forever and ever! Luckily for you, entry to the event dungeon can be had for the low price of $2 a pop ;)

Many bosses are designed with attacks that straight up one-shot you, even despite a supposed one-shot protection system (All the damage must take place on a single frame and you have to pray there aren't any DoT effects on you). Terrain features are put into boss fight arenas with the explicit purpose of clipping into you in weird ways to prevent your dodges and movement. Permadeath can usually be fun and exciting, but having your time and effort (even your actual money) be invalidated because a boss randomly decides to jump on top of you repeatedly and turn your ronin into red paste... it just feels very dishonest.

There's a handy wardrobe where you can store the cute hats you find for later use. Theoretically. Because you have to pay real money to use it, with the cost scaling from $3.50 for a normal hat to a whopping $13.50 for event hats :)

I deeply regret putting time and money into this game and I cannot recommend it to anyone, not that many people want to play it if you look at the player count. I gave it multiple chances because games of this type are slim pickings and there are some genuinely interesting ideas in Born Again. But there are better ways to spend your time than grinding away at the RNG millstone that is this game while the devs find increasingly more insidious ways to nickle and dime you.

The devs loaded the prologue with everything the game has to offer to rope people in. Admittedly, the prologue was actually quite good, but it seems nothing meaningful has changed since this first came to Steam and you still can't even create a custom character for the actual game. If you've played the prologue, there's not really much more worth doing, so if you're interested in this, try to get through the prologue in under 2 hours so you can still get a refund.

The main game is a real slog and not worth attempting to engage with. Outside of the short, highly curated environment of the prologue, the health system is utterly obnoxious and forces you to fill your inventory with injury treatment items or else suffer being effectively a dead man walking after after a few combat encounters. Imagine Escape From Tarkov's bodypart health system but with a normal HP bar tacked on. It's very poorly thought out, because the HP bar doesn't seem to serve any purpose except to limit the time you can spend in combat. Bodypart HP is what is actually keeping you alive long term, but can only be healed with items. Unlike Tarkov though, healing items aren't exactly cheap nor space efficient and you're subjected to full RNG with regards to getting more while in the field. There are no dedicated loot containers for these items like in Tarkov, and enemies almost never drop them, unlike Tarkov's scavs. So once you exhaust the injury treatment supplies you brought with you from town (you will), you are going to be constantly debuffed until you return to town to get more. Not very immersive, nor does it follow the spirit of a proper roguelike like this game tries to be. Debuffs include the expected stat reductions making your character perform worse, but also includes lowering your max HP, so you can spend even less time in combat.

Enemies are theoretically also subjected to the garbage health mechanics, but because they only stick around long enough to put injuries on you before dying, with no practical way for you to target specific bodyparts on them, it really only effects you. Once you're injured enough and out of injury treatment items, you're then put into a death spiral due to another hidden HP bar called Pain. Unable to cure your injuries, your pain HP will continue to lower and you'll stay permanently in pain, which means constantly getting hit with debuffs like confusion (can't control your character properly) or being unable to move so you might as well have died the moment you ran out of healing salves. Not a well designed system and it's been this way since I first played the game 4 years ago, so it's clearly here to stay.

The sheer granularity of the health system in this game is horrendous and it's just not fun at all. You have hunger, thirst, mana, HP, bodypart HP, pain, toxicity, etc. of constant metre juggling you have to perform. Do you need to quickly restore HP? You would think to eat herbs or drink a potion, but these will hit your thirst and toxicity metres, so you'll then need more items to counteract what were supposed to be solutions to your problems. With most of your inventory space needing to be committed to injury treatment items in the first place, your backpack ends up completely full and looking like you dumped the entire pharmacy and grocery store in it, with no room for actual loot.

TL;DR: This game is extremely tedious and not worth your money let alone your time.

I've put a lot of time in this game and have had a real blast with it (for some of that time, at least). I really wish I could recommend this game because it has a lot of great ideas and a style and personality that really work for me personally. Mechanically, deckbuilding is fun and the fighting is full of tension and excitement. It comes so close to being a fantastic game that it's a real shame that I have to recommend against it.

Firstly, the developers have not only proven to be chronically inept at balancing their game, but have all but said outright that they've finished with it. So this is it. No further content to be expected and the glacial speed of balance fixes will probably reach that much closer towards absolute zero from here on out. If you expect to go deep into deckbuilding and style mastery, which are more or less the endgame goals of the PvP (the main content of the game), you may be frustrated that the majority of moves, most powers and some styles are simply irrelevant considering how terribly updates (and lack thereof) have crippled them or made their competitors superlatively strong by comparison. I understand that the developers are having a bit of trouble right now and need to prioritise new ventures that'll keep the company going, but them abandoning ship at such an unhealthy state of gameplay doesn't bode well for the game's longevity.

Furthermore, the 'community' for this game in my region (OCE) is the most toxic and petty group of people I've ever seen despite how small it is and how tight-knit it should be for a population-challenged indie fighting game. Trashtalk and salt are an expected part of fighting games and this one's no different, but for some reason this game's community goes beyond playful jabs between rivals and towards constant whining and mean-spirited belittling. While I would maybe go out on a limb to recommend the game itself in a vacuum, this is fundamentally a PvP game, so it's inevitable that you'll run into these people and I simply cannot in good conscience recommend such an experience to anybody seeking a good way to spend their time. I suppose if you're a masochist that enjoys waiting literal hours for a match only to be paired with someone that very likely will get incredibly salty when losing and rub things in your face when winning (talking trash about you on Discord regardless of outcome), then this is the perfect environment for you.

TL;DR - The developers have pretty much pronounced the game finished despite leaving it in a horrendously flawed state and the tiny, toxic community aren't enjoyable to interact with.

Put more than 300 hours into this game. Was very fun and I'd probably still be playing today if not for the fact that it's been impossible to get into a game for the past 3 months since the map selection patch destroyed matchmaking in my region (OC). The developers don't really seem to care, so neither will I.

If you live in SEA or Oceania regions, don't bother with this game anymore. You will not be able to play it.
