You either have to take time to learn the game or do it the hard way like i did and start on a pvp server solo which was soul destroying,
I would suggest doing single player for awhile to learn the game then when ready join a PvE server and then PvP when/ if that's what you so wish to do.

Better with friends but also an enjoyable solo experience but for many it just requires patience and dying alot to understand the game.
