This game was really fun. I’m glad it’s been updated. I hope the planned prequel and sequel will get made now that the rights have returned to the dev.

The only bug I noticed is that the Von Kiefer Journal url doesn’t work right anymore and directs you to a malware site or something. This needs to be fixed ASAP.

The artbook is amazing and includes many concepts that never made it into the final game. More than two whole levels were cut! In retrospect, I think that was a bad idea. One of the biggest complaints about this game is the too short length and the insufficient environmental storytelling. I think including those cut concepts would have reduced those issues and lead to more accurate story analyses (so far none of the analyses I've seen were able to figure out what the artbook says was intended). Hope the cuts can be added back through DLC; fingers crossed!

Update Jan 2023: The PDF has been removed and replaced with poorly converted epub and mobi files. They look like ♥♥♥♥ because the formatting wasn't redesigned for it. I wouldn't have minded if the PDF wasn't removed, but now I'm changing this to a negative review.

I really want to like this game, but I honestly can’t recommend it.

Like a lot of modern games, it can’t decide what it wants to be. Story driven? Amnesia clone? FPS? High budget xenorotica? Survival horror? As a result, the mechanics are janky as hell and just get in the way of my enjoyment.

I only played this for the story, and I’ve got no interest in replaying it because the gameplay just gets in the way and the story is actually fairly weak. The characters aren’t as developed as I’d like; having a journal where the protagonist records his thoughts on the characters would be hugely helpful. The plot twists are very easy to predict if you pay any attention at all to the dialogue or the lore items you can collect over the course of the game, to the point where the protagonist has to be an idiot not to realize himself. There’s supposed to be some philosophy here involving wireheading, but it’s not developed and I find that a shame.

The sex, in all its gruesome fetishistic detail, is easily this game’s greatest contribution to video game history. There’s consensual sex, rape, gay rape, BDSM, torture, teratophilia and xenophilia. It also ties into the story rather than being completely disconnected: the game is about sex cults, after all. The downside is that there isn’t really that much of it, especially the alien sex that’s probably the game’s biggest selling point. I’m not interested in the sex for its own sake tho (I don’t play one-handed), so I would have appreciated more “artsy” sex if that makes any sense. More pillow talk, more interactivity and feedback, maybe telepathy for the alien sex to highlight the horror aspects (I’m not gonna spoil this, but you’ll understand if you read the lore). Even so, porn games treat people as unrealistically proportioned blowup dolls and it’s refreshing that Lust refrains from that even as it depicts gruesome sexual violence.

I think it would have benefited from a SOMA-style Safe Mode where you wouldn’t have to worry about gameplay and could just enjoy the story. Unfortunately that wouldn’t solve the weaknesses in the story, and it would probably get a lot of criticism from people who hate “walking sims.” (I really hate that name because it has so much unnecessary and toxic baggage attached.)

I can’t really blame the devs for being unable to find a good balance. The industry is extremely elitist on all sides when it comes to walking sims and holds unhealthy attitudes towards sex in general.

It’s a pity. This game has things to say about horror, sexuality, and philosophy, but it’s buried by underdevelopment and being beholden to the absurd constraints of the video game industry. Argh

Good RTS. Need more games like this.

Does need some QoL polish, but is robust otherwise. The dev should probably have released in Early Access, but too late now.

Doesn’t currently have multiplayer but I’ll let that slide because RTS is hell to program that for. I’ve read articles about it, and it sounds exhausting.

Biggest upside is that the game is fully moddable due to using JavaScript.
