A great and entertaining film that still holds up well 18 years later. I cannot speak on how well it adapts the source material of Louis Sachar's book as I have yet to read it, but it's one of the best PG films I've ever seen that stands up with the likes of 90's drama/adventure classics like Hook or Tom & Huck. It intersperses the mystery elements of the past with present-day comedy and drama quite well, and though some of the transitions are a bit fumbled, it's still understandable and ties together nicely in the end.

Holes is one of those few movies I can return to again and again over the years that has something appealing for everyone, which I think is one of its greatest strengths. The relationship between Katherine/Kate Barlow and Sam, as well as Stanley's friendship with Zero, are always so heartwarming. Even though the former was tragic, Kate's rebellion was amazing to watch. Strong female characters are a particular favorite of mine.

The comedy between the warden Louise Walker, Mr. Sir, and Pedanski were also great, as was Eartha Kitt as Madame Zeroni.
