Dead Space review
Revival of the fittest

EA takes a leaf out of Capcom's book with the remake of Dead Space, because not only is this is a remake done right, it's a hugely enjoyable experience from start to finish that enhances the property in all the right areas. This 2023 remake honours the source game in all aspects, even ironing out the original games rough edges and expanding nicely upon the games lore so purists of the original should fret not.

Dead Space now looks and sounds terrific by modern day gaming standards (just listening to the ship creak and groan is enough to induce pant-soiling in those first few hours without the demonic howls of the creatures on board that will eventually pummel towards you), but they have taken core concepts and game mechanics from the original and modernised them for the better making playing this version of the game far more enjoyable to play.

Now not only do a handful of the mining weapons you encounter offer actual usefulness to the player, each and every tool is useful in this remake and if upgraded correctly can provide a devastating attack that works to the players advantage. I also like how they have integrated the weapons into the game now having the player find them dotted around the ship rather than purchasing them from a store. It's a small change but it adds to the immersion factor greatly.

Lore has also been expanded upon, with new side quests and characters that delve into the motivations of key characters in the game giving it a lot more depth than the original. Many of the big boss fights, while still similar in nature to the original, have been tweaked and changed for the better making the grotesque encounters with them even more terrifying.

One major change is the way the game handles zero gravity, which to be honest was a bit messy in the original game. I don’t think the technology was quite there for it when the original made its debut as I generally found these sections in the original frustrating to move through. With this remake they are exhilarating sections to navigate through (one can quickly lose their bearings if not paying attention which will often have fatal consequences for the player) and I regularly found myself drawing deep breaths just like Isaac himself while moving through these sections. I can't stress enough how good they are now. These sections are like chalk and cheese when comparing them to the original.

Another major change is that the main protagonist now also has a voice, but thankfully he only speaks when spoken too so unlike other third person adventures you don't have to listen to the character natter away to themselves constantly (aka Nathan Drake or Aloy) which is an annoying feature in most modern games today.

My only gripes is that the game can't sustain the tension of the first few hours due to its lengthy running time so the scares and frights eventually give way to some slight annoyance, especially since the game likes to continuously throw you into rooms with increasing number of Necromorphs. Also enemy variety is a bit limited. From around the four/five hours mark the player would have encountered almost all varieties of enemies the game throws at you so the surprise factor diminishes somewhat, especially given that the player becomes more of a force to be reckoned with as the game progresses and you upgrade your weapons.

Performance is good for the most part but there are traversal stutters (movement between two different areas) that slightly hamper the game performance. In my eyes these are small gripes though because when eveything is said and done, Motive have provided gamer's with an outstanding single player experience from top to bottom that I can't recommend enough. I am comfortable EA hand over the license to Motive now because they have proven they clearly understand the assignment.

Bring on the remake of the second game!

One word or phrase to sum up the experience
Nightmare fuel

Performance/Bug related incidents
There is a slight stutter that happens when Isaac moves between different areas and while its noticeable, it doesn't significantly alter ones enjoyment of the game.

I mean, you can do that in Binary Domain too, doesn't really make them similar games. Kinda like if you were to also say because you can run in FIFA it's similar to Dead Space :re3charlie:

In Remnant you can also shoot enemies in the legs to bring them down

Wait... How is this similar to Remant: From the Ashes? Isn't that a souls-like with guns? As far as I know, Dead Space isn't a souls-like game. :potatowhat:
