If I had to say a game was "The game of my childhood", it was this game. To this day probably my favorite game of all time. Great graphics for it's time, simple yet fun gameplay. Also learned a hell of a lot about Greek, Egyptian and Scandinavian mythology by reading the in-game facts about the characters and things in game.

The extended edition is a little wonky and introduces some new bugs, some being minor and others causing issues. Nothing to make you rage over, but just a warning. A few mods can fix them easy enough.

If you're an old AoM player, there's very little difference between this and the game you know and loved playing before. They did add a few things graphic-wise to improve it while also adding and nerfing a few units/power/abilities to balance gameplay. I'd say what it detracts from the old game it makes up for with improved gameplay and performance. Solid 8.9/10

My first review of this game was glowing. And to a degree, everything I said in that review still holds true to an extent. But after putting a lot of thought into it, I decided I had to write a new one.

Don't get me wrong. Skyrim is a great game. I have over 1,500 hours in it across both Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition. I get the urge to play it all the time. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

That being said, Skyrim is a great RPG, but a HORRIBLE Elder Scrolls game.

My first experience with Elder Scrolls was Morrowind alllll the way back in 2003. I was enamored, to say the least. After a year or so of playing it, I learned of Arena and Daggerfall. I tried playing those, although even at that time they still had their bugs that made them nigh unplayable on certain PC's. I have since gone on to play and complete both, and while they weren't my cup of tea so to speak, I did see what others saw in them: revolutionizing RPG's that turned gaming on its head much the same way Fallout and Fallout 2 did. Nevertheless, Morrowind had my heart.

A few years later, Oblivion was released. I bought it a few weeks after launch and played it incessantly for weeks. As much as I loved Oblivion and had fun playing it, it left a sour taste in my mouth. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't Morrowind. They had chipped and cracked at what made Morrowind great and dumbed it down. It wasn't a bad game, but it could have been more. To this day, I still have a hard time playing Oblivion.

Then the joyous day came when Skyrim was announced. Excited as I was, I tempered my expectations and waited a few months after launch to buy it in order to give time to both see reviews of it while also allowing bugs and quirks to be worked out. As soon as I launched it, I realized this was different than any other Elder Scrolls game. They were going in a new direction both artistically and story-wise. Was I on board? With the art, of course. With gameplay mechanics and story? No, because yet again Bethesda watered the game down further. It had essentially been turned into a hack and slash where you're not some stranger rising through the ranks, but rather a god who can posses every power known to Tamriel. Ranks in factions were gone, now you just... are. Strategy had all but been replaced with map markers and straight lines to objectives. Long, deep, immersive dialogue had turned into short quips and talking down to the player. This isn't the Elder Scrolls I'd grown to love over the proceeding 8 year (now almost 20). This was watered down slop. This was entertainment for the masses with low risk offerings that put the risk of failure at a minimum.

In the end, I'm still going to recommend Skyrim. It is no doubt a great game and deserves praise.

But it is by no means a masterpiece. Compared to other games of its time, it is on par in terms of playability and game mechanics. Compared to its predecessors however, it is a shell, an inkling of what it came from and seriously makes me question what The Elder Scrolls 6 will be if Bethesda continues down the road it's currently riding along.

I can't think of many games that can bring me to tears, and this one could. From nearly the beginning it had me already, all the way up to the end. Solid 9/10 would recommend this game to anyone.
