It's a chill game for a casual player. You wont really feel like you're falling behind if you play it your way. Everything scales to you.

Early Access Review
This game is fun with or without friends but it get's boring once you've learnt everything the game and the map and been everywhere, etc. Waaay more fun with friends and also if you make bases. But the developers are pretty slow at releasing "big" updates and there is a lack of content if you're not playing the game for only PVP. That being said, mods are being created at this very moment and will change the game completely for the better.
