Initially I gave this a negative review because I had two save games ruined, back-to-back, by game breaking bugs that I couldn't go back to after tens of hours of playtime.

Years on I bought Phantom Liberty on recommendation from a friend and was told to try it again. They really did fix all the problems I had with the game. It was already my favourite open game world and in-game universe, but the bugs killed it. With the DLC and all the fixes, it's entered my top games of all time.

100% recommend.

Pretty bland compared to DIRT 4. Seems like Codemasters is splitting the DIRT style and the Rally style into their own franchises. Point to consider below:
- Car selection has some interesting entries.
- The Gymkhana mode and custom editor is great.
- The campaign has tree-style progression, sectioned into different splits where you need to get so many tokens to unlock the next split. I found the campaign really boring after 2 "splits" since it felt like I raced most tracks in this time (around 20ish races).
- Track list feels really thin.
- Didn't like the podcast style of story delivery. If you like Donut Media you may enjoy this.

Can't recommend this until it heavily drops in price.

EDIT
Hey it's a while later and it crashes every time I start a race. Avoid until patched out, but it looks like this has been a problem since February.

What I expected to be a game like Ship Breaker or House Flipper turned into the weirdest, oddest trader journey I've ever experienced in a video game.

The exploration takes front and centre after the first couple of locations. Selling and haggling are a bit simplistic, but serve their purpose. It's a game to play for the adventure you go on, rather than trying to make money.

Completed hardest difficulty solo in around 8 hours. Narrator is enjoyable and his voice lines are unique enough that you don't notice them repeating while you play. The hints that he subtly drops is also useful for certain puzzles. Not recommended for people that hate the British accent, or old-style-pulpy commentary.

Characters themselves are unique in their personality and abilities, barring the 5th DLC character (received for free) that I feel doesn't stand out enough, but suites the universe.

I enjoy the gunplay, and none of the weapons feel too overpowered. The gems that are found in chests give them enough customisation without the guns falling into the typical realm of out-of-universe tactical. There is chests that give you powerful relic weapons with limited ammo, but these are spaced out enough you can't just chain their usage together.

Puzzles are fun to do. The exploration aspect of the game encourages you to try and solve the puzzles within the level to be rewarded. Rewards are either gold, gems to slot into weapons, relics, and lore items. Gold is only used to buy weapons, which you can maybe get all of them after a good 10-12 hours of solo play. The relics have "sets", so once a set is complete you get a skill point to spend on a new power amulet for a character. I found I was only using the primary or another specific one with each character, but there is amusing ones in there.

Horde mode is typical horde mode (run-shoot-kill-survive), but I found the pleasant surprise of a level-wide puzzle to be completed to be given the option to buy an extra "super" gun.

Score attack is pretty self-explanatory; go through a part of the level attempting to get the highest score (kills, relics, gold, time, etc).

No major bugs found while playing. Frame drops only encountered in one area where it was the middle of a level, and there was about 10-15 traps all operating at once. Annoying, but fine once I got through. All the typical PC options are available.

Is it worth the money now? I'm unsure. I had a lot of fun solo, and will be playing coop, but the shortness of the overall game feels lacking. I don't think it's worth the £39.99 I paid, but if it came down to £25-30 I would definitely recommend to anyone. However, if you don't really care for longivity and want a great pulp-style experience, this game is worth it.

Got this in the humble bundle for £15 and have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far.

Co-op and story was a blast, but very short. While I've almost done all the levels with gold ranking on each difficulty level, it feels a little copy-paste and lacking compared to the previous series developed by Gearbox. The humor is there and there are some very memorable lines, however, overall I feel like I wanted more to the story. Not much is explained in terms of why the main bad guys are doing what they do, and the best way to find out is character lore (which requires certain challenges and play time). Each level follows a very specific layout (minion fight-mini boss-minion fight/escort-main boss) and can get boring if you don't get lost in doing lore/fighting/trying to pull off cool skill combos. The key factor is to set yourself in-game challenges and work towards those, being either character lore or score-based medals.

Multiplayer was hard at first with the pretty unbalanced matchmaking due to the low player base, but good games and bad games come along. I play with two other level 80+ players and we can still get rolled through games if we have low level players. We do try our best to encourage and teach mechanics (as long as they actually want to learn!) so to best try and keep players in the community. While there is three different multiplayer game modes, I feel only Incursion is the game mode where players will thrive in a tactical-MOBA-esque mode. Games can be frustrating if you don't have people willing to fill character gaps (healer/tank/melee damage) and these will quickly ruin your experience. It is best when a player embraces their role and tries their best to help the team, which is difficult with most players as the past years of games have promoted self-play, instead of team-play. Choosing when, and if, to initiate and sacrifice your kda for a team fight is a skill upon itself.

The character cast itself is diverse and quirky, with each characters personality popping out of the screen. Some good voice acting mixed with strange character traits provides the player with loveable rogues they get attached to. The art style is very typical Gearbox, and I personally enjoy this. It may feel a bit gimmicky with the casts over-the-top personalities, and can be tiresome to hear the same cheesy voice lines from characters you personally dislike.

Overall, a very enjoyable game with friends, sometimes frustrating multiplayer, but shines through in its moments of glory when all the same pieces come together.
