For those who dont want to read whole rant skip to very end to read summarized version.
Pretty much 100% this game and i am long time souls fan who has 3000+ hours over BB,DS,DS1,DS2,DS3.
This game is basically DS2 combat (even slower and clunkier then that) that has worst action que in any game i have played period (but only when you dont want it, if you try and use it to your advantage it does not work).
Worst camera and its auto adjustments from any souls game they made.
A bunch of cheesy hidden ways to kill you like traps, ambushes (SO many ambushes) in fact i could call this game ''dark souls the check your corners edition''.
Open world exploration is basically a bunch of copy paste chalice like dungeons with same bosses over and over again, in fact other then SOME of main story bosses there are no unique bosses in game, from like 200~ bosses i could count on my fingers which bosses were unique maybe as far as using only 1 hand, most of the other ones i killed 3-5 times.
Now this might be my own personal complain, but i got 100% items in game (including spells, armors, weapons, summons etc...) and even so they have been making these games for quite a while now and has many different armor sets, weapons, spells etc... already designed which they could reuse to make old fans happy and make it seem like there is more in a game for new players without actually developing more, they did not, making total game inventory seem kinda small, and those ''chalice like'' copy paste dungeons feel unrewarding and even more of the same then they could be.
Most spells that are in game does not work with game environment and general combat making them utterly useless, same with weapon skills making it feel a lot like DS 3 weapon skills (i guess they still have not learned from their mistakes).
Worst side quest and NPC implementation i have ever seen, NPCs usually moves all over the world without telling where they move, often with certain conditions which they dont tell you about, and when someone gives you a small hint (in riddles) of where they are going, or whats going to happen, you better not accidentally skip that part, crash the game, or look away from subtitles, you better hear 100% of it and not be attacked by something patrolling around while talking to him because they will tell you only ONCE (cause you know why would open world game have a journal ? that makes no sense, i mean you are playing illiterate tarnished why would you think or writing the hint NPC told you once down...).
New mechanic summons which can help you against bosses quite a bit by acting pretty much as a tank, is ONLY useful as a tank.... i mean there are quite few of them supposedly using different abilities and being unique and what not, ALL BS every single one is useless and is there only as a meat shield (one being an exception and quite interesting one who mimics your build giving you a literal copy of yourself, but ofc summons were not suppose to be interesting so they eventually nerfed him to the ground making him just stand around and do nothing effectively making the ONLY fun summon another meat shield), also summons can be only used against bosses generally removing an interesting and unique mechanic from most of the game, your stats and items do not influence them with exception of some buffs and heals (no summoner builds sadly).
When it comes to elden ring you cant write a review without talking about mechanics of the game, that includes poise, skills, animation speeds, buffs literally everything that game is, the quickest way to describe it would be that games does not follow its own rules, sometimes it may seem like something works 1 way and then you try it again and it does not work that way anymore even so you have not changed anything, for example, you have an enemy that you can stun lock by just attacking and it works 100% of the time then you meet same enemy in another place and you cant, almost like that specific enemy has super poise even so he has same health, damage and looks the same, another example, you are trying to farm certain set from an enemy, there are MANY of them everywhere, but it never drops or drops only some pieces lets say boots and armor, you would think that maybe you are just not getting lucky, but in reality you need to go and find another enemy of same type and farm him, because the one you farmed before drops only boots and armor, now generally when you want equipment that enemy wields it drops from those enemies, but sometimes it does not drop at all and you instead have to go and loot it in some random place, or sometimes it drops only 2 pieces while another drops other 2, this is just 2 of the ways game does not follow its own rules, the more you play the more you notice how poorly mechanics are developed.
Multiplayer... its quite hard to connect to each other and play game on multiplayer in other games so you would think their newest game with extra designated summoning places would make it easier, but no... they somehow made it even worse to connect to each other, in fact its so hard that this game should not be tagged as multiplayer game on steam, thats misleading, there are so many conditions you have to fulfill in order to be able to connect to each other its ridiculous, in my 400 hours of playing online i have only been invaded only once, invading 3 players for a quest took me 2 hours of waiting and that was when steam online numbers said there was 800k people currently playing it (that should give you a picture of how hard it is to invade someone), once you finally invade or join coop with someone, lag is unbearable (i have 1000Mb wired internet connection with extreme stability and after trying coop with around 50 different people cross-region and not i could not find a single one that i could actually play with without extreme laggs)
I could sit here and rant about stupid design choices of elden ring as long as i played it (400 hours of ranting about how bad elden ring is compared to previous games ? easy ...), but i think need to sum it up in few words for those who dont want to read whole rant.
Here it goes:
Elden ring is a worst version of fromsoftware souls like games, open world is as disappointing as it can get filled with boring dungeons that were clearly copy pasted and underdeveloped, multiplayer is almost non existent and laggy, gameplay is not difficult like in other souls like games, but made cheesy which annoy players into frustration, only if you want more souls like games and you dont care about their flaws, only if you are hardcore souls fan and understand each game is different in its own way, only then i would recommend buying this game as its a good timekiller, if you are new and you wanna try good soulslike game, go play bloodborne or dark souls 3.
