It's a matter of preference whether this one or Civ 4 are the best in the franchise, but either way you're getting one of the best 4x games ever made.

It's a lot of fun! as someone who perfers to play the campaigns or fight bots, they seem to be pretty smart so far. The AI will try to build stone walls and launch raids even on lower difficulties so it really feels like it's giving you a challenge.

The Civs they have here are pretty diverse, but it is hard to beat the sheer amount that AoE2 has amassed over the last few decades, but if you're a sucker for graphics like I am, having your spearmen all look like they actually belong to the faction you're playing as is still a big plus, and your cities always end up looking really pretty with the VFX they add to fill in empty space with stuff like roads and yards.

It's still got room to grow, but It's a good start and I think it could be actually amazing someday with a few extra civs and campaigns added.

Gameplay is fine, but it's riddled with horrible bugs. One fun one is when the game launches in a messed up resolution that makes it unplayable, and because the game auto sets the resolution and doesn't give the player the option to change it there's no way to fix it. Devs shouldn't be allowed to release games without providing options like that.

Grindy as hell and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ aggravating to play. The idea of being able to play around with all this military hardware is great but poor balancing and a disgusting monetization system mean that you aren't likely to see most of it unless you're willing to sacrifice literal years of your life or approximately the same weight in real world cash.

The really unfortunate thing is that it's basically the only game of its kind on the market right now so you either put up with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gaijin gives you or you stop playing, and as of right now I'm done.

I've tried to get into it, but the game feels bland and I run into weird bugs fairly regularly. Some, like minions getting stuck as the helipad or the cruise ship just never coming, mean that I have to reload to an earlier point just to get it to start working again.

Even if the bugs were fixed, the game is kind of dry. Combat is terrible and base building doesn't feel quite as satisfying as it did in EG1. A big downside for me is how little character the hero factions are given. In EG1 every single enemy type had a unique look depending on where they came from, but now they're all just recolors of each other. The enemy super agents seemed like they could be interesting, but Agent X was the only one I didn't just find annoying.

I'm not sure bug fixes would be enough to bring this game back, the gameplay itself is weak and there isn't enough charm anywhere else to make you want to slog through it.

great game on it's own, with a massive campaign and competant AI for the skirmish mode.
But do yourself a favor and take a look at the "Wars of liberty" Mod, it pushes the game into the 19th century and adds around 20 new playable factions.

What is there to say? It's good and the sequel is looking to be even better.

Early Access Review
This game is pretty fantastic. It still has a ways to go, the later ages feel pretty unfinished and some civs just feel stronger than others. Not to mention the wildlife is insanely hostile and trying to fight off one angry pig can result in a major battle against the combined forces of nature.

But it's fun to play and it's clearly coming along nicely.
