Is it weird to say that in 2024 the Mass Effect trilogy is still the best scifi RPG/Story based game available? Because I still fail to find a real contender. Experience this universe and characters across these 3 games is really something special that stays with you even a while after you finish it.

Now each game in the trilogy is somewhat unique on the positives or negatives it brings.

The original Mass Effect is just dated in many aspects with the gameplay being the worst offender. It just never reaches above mediocre for the year 2024 even with the upgrades of Legendary Edition. However, to compensate the universe and lore work is outstanding even if sometimes presented in a boring way (out of the way side quests and text based exposition). A lot of the character setup which will payoff later is also done here which is an underrated aspects of ME1.

Mass Effect 2 is my favorite and it is just the better individual game from the trilogy. The setup with the suicide mission and having to recruit your squadmates just works brilliantly. There is so much freedom in what way you can approach the content presented to you. If the first game sells you on the universe then the second game is the one sells you on the characters. The only flaw I can think of is that the plot of ME2 is somewhat disconnected from the main conflict which always felt a bit weird in retrospective.

Now the third game is complicated. I still think it is a great game that has a few rare terrible moments in it. The gameplay feels great still and ends up as a good iteration of ME2. The setup for the final part of the plot also work great with ME3 having a really strong opening. The plot points related to your companions from previous games are handled really well imo and take into account a lot of your actions across the entire trilogy. However, the main plot kind of stumbles after the initial arc with a very meandering middle portion and luck luster ending both from a story and gameplay perspective. This has been talked to death over the years so there is no need to rant anymore about it.

Overall, Mass Effect ends up being a lot more than the sum of its parts. It creates one of my fovorite SciFi universe and characters with moments that no other SciFi setting game has managed to top thus far.

Overall, a good Fate story with decent gameplay. If you are a long time Fate fan this will be right up your alley with a surprising variety of servants both old and new to interact/play with. Special mention to the game having Jalter/Musashi/Circe which are some of my favs in the franchise..

Without going into details, the main plot surprised me in a positive way with some of its direction choices. Although some characters did end up a bit under developed even if some info was hinted at in the first half of the game. It's like they wanted to do something more with them but abandoned the idea midway through which makes the larger plot feel a bit weird consistency wise.

The gameplay is fine but a bit bare bones for a 30 hour experience and by the end I was very much done with the combat sections. Still it has a solid and fun core foundation that is just a few extra tweaks and improvements to go from fine to great.

From what I could gather, this was a somewhat mid to small budget game that apparently was a good success sales wise. A sequel that just builds on top of the foundations already setup by Samurai Remnant has a lot of potential to surpass the line between a decent/good game to a great one.

This game is an absolute gem and there isn't anything quite like it in the gaming market. The medieval art style gives Pentiment a unique feeling and look that on its own is probably worth the experience. There isn't really any gameplay to speak of but the length and pacing of Pentiment's is very well thought out so it manages to realize its mystery/story without overstaying its welcome.

The mystery and overall plot is not overly complex but that ends up as a positive towards Pentiment in my opinion. The focused historical setting feels grounded and as a result the characters feel real and relatable. I still remember the many different characters each one with their own little stories and relations that tie up to the main plot. One thing that really impressed me about Pentiment was the usage of passage of time between the different points of the narrative to highlight how much the setting changes but in a way also how much it stays the same across the timeline of the story.

If you are into visual novel/point and click games with engaging narratives and the medieval art style is your thing this game is an easy must buy. Hopefully it will enter your favorite games list as that "medieval painting visual novel" like it did for me.

This game really punches above it's weight showing that budget means nothing compared to having a solid idea and vision on how to execute it.

Obviously, as a point and click the story/characters/narrative will make or break the experience and I'm glad to say Bone Totem delivers a surprisingly nice story within the scope it setup for itself. The game takes the smart approach of having a more complex setting/mystery that can slowly reveal while sticking to a small trio of main characters that allows it to keep the emotional side of the narrative more focused. The presentation (in particular the voice acting) is also very impressive and really allowed the story to hit the emotional moments it needed to especially towards the end.

Something that I wasn't expecting going into this game was how clever its point and click puzzle design would be. Well maybe not the design of the actual puzzles themselves (those were rather standard but still decent for the genre) but instead the system the game uses to interact with said puzzles. Bone Totem makes the smart design choice to allow the trio of playable characters with different abilities to be able to exchange items and communicate when in different places. This makes it possible to have very rewarding domino effect puzzles while keeping the character interactions still going strong which makes the player care more about the characters. Although in some stretches of the game the pacing suffers a bit with some puzzles requiring a bit too much moving parts to advance forward without feeling like it was dragging (important to say that this was rare).

I really enjoyed this 15 hour experience much more than what I was expecting to. I recommend it to anyone that is a fan of story driven games and finds the premise/synopsis of it intriguing.

First it is important to recognise how CDPR turned this game from a lackluster empty and maybe even mediocre experience to a very much improved package. Having tried to play this prior to 2.0 and dropping it after a few hours after it failed to click with me at all, it is very impressive to see how CDPR managed to overall it through a large amount of small improvements that made the entire experience much smoother and enjoyable. (Although some credit must also go to the Trigger anime for giving it a second chance in the PR front for a lot of people myself included).

Moving on to the game itself, the best way I've found to describe Cyberpunk is that it is one of the most consistent "good" game I've played so far. What I mean by that is that I struggle to find any main aspect of the gameplay/story/characters/design that I find particularly bad but at the same time I can't pinpoint any 10/10 amazing moments from the experience either. I don't want this to sound as a negative since achieving this level of consistency in a game with a decent number of moving parts is not easy at all and I still had a fun time with the gameplay and walking around with Keanu Reaves and Idris Elba. However, after finishing it it feels like a game that I enjoyed and not one of my favs like the CDPR precious Witcher 3 and I think I was expecting more out of it that never really gave me.

Overall, the complete package of the main game with the Phantom Liberty DLC is still a great deal and worth your time and if the story/gameplay clicks with you in particular it has potential to be one of your futuere favs.
