Well i've had fun with it so far. If the game you are looking for is a chillaxing unwinder after a hard days work, then look elsewhere; however if you are looking for a rewarding and challenging fps experience then Desync has carved out quite a niche. A solid 7/10.
For an indie game Desync is quite good, it isn't flawless and there are/were a few bugs with the release version, but having said that i can still say with some confidence that the game is very well crafted. It is clear that a lot of other games have inspired this one because so much of the core gameplay is straight out ripped; such as the smooth a.f. dash moves (but no air dash, why !?), the bosses that so much depend on working out your dodge-timing, the many trap elements that are as much an opportunity as a navigation hazard, the constant movement, the frequent respawn, and of course the complete lack of a story element which was an odd choice is an era when even Doom made the attempt.
Desync is very stylish and difficult to succeed at which wouldn't be a bad thing if it wasn't also so difficult to pick up in the first place. There are so many elements required to play even moderately well that for the first several hours you'll be struggling to keep up, which could have been avoided with a tutorial, an easy mode, a bot demonstration mode, or even some half-way decent in-game documentation. If learning by doing is your jam, or your just a masochist, then with enough effort you can figure it out, but why would you want to have to ?
After tweaking the settings the graphics hurt my eyes after more than an hour or two, yet the polygonal style matches the nostalgic intent of the Desync quite perfectly; which is only complemented by the excellent soundtrack. I kindof feels like they chose the art to fit an aesthetic and then forgot to playtest - because a little bit of polish could have preserved the neon cool without burning it into the players brain - so yes the epilepsy/seizure warning is quite apt.
Last thought, there aren't a lot of levels and there is no multiplayer, there are score leaderboards and an alternate version for each level, which does not increase the replay value above zero; Desync is cheap enough to make up for that.
Anyhow i've had fun with it so far, and i do hope the developers learn from the effort because there is a lot of potential under that hood and it would be a right shame if there was no sequel.
