I've been playing SoT for about 2 years between my xbox and steam games and I truly do love being a pirate on the high seas.
My one and only complaint has always been the lack of PvE-only options for more casual, non-competitive players.
Today is the day that all of that changes. Rare has FINALLY listened to their fans and has given us a server option that removes PVP from the equation entirely.
That change has inspired me to give this game a positive review finally.
With this change, I can see this game gaining another 3-5 years of life breathed into it beyond its existing platform.
Thank you for listening to your fans, Rare.

Saw the great reviews and saw very enticing co-op gameplay. Bought the game.
Didn't play for a couple months. Installed and went to play Co-op.
Couldn't find Co-op.
Look at store page and see that Co-op is a paid DLC and only playable split screen remote if the owner of the DLC hosts (and has good enough internet to support the co-op friend).
Instant uninstall.
Paid Co-op as an added feature gives ick vibes. Nty.

Terrible game, it's been 3 days since I've slept, my wife left me and my career is ruined because "The huns aren't a real issue,"
but they ARE, BOB FROM ACCOUNTING, THEY ARE!
Don't buy this, you'll wish you accepted that deal with the crossroads demon 2 months ago.

This game = Best girl
(will update real review once I pry myself away from game)
P.S. Played since demo/prologue was released and beta tested the game.

P.S.S. Still love the game, but super disappointed in the delay for co-op mode. It's been 2 years, come on y'all...

This isn't going to be a majorly technical review just yet, but if you've been looking for a base builder game that balances mechanics that are all equally important in order to achieve victory without needing to create an army or go overboard with the tactical side of things, then this is a great option for you!
If you're highly intimidated by circuits and networks and creating webs of wires, switches, automation, etc, then this is NOT the game for you.
I am intimidated by automation and switches and such, but I went ahead and learned it anyway and I still don't fully understand, but I'm capable of keeping my dudes alive now, but I've had 3 failed survival missions so far and I still THOROUGHLY enjoy this game. It's super fun and it really scratches the mining/looting/OCD construction itch you've had for a long time!
10/10, would suffocate again.

I love civs and I love 40k.
This marries the two of them together and tweaks the playstyle to focus mostly on combat with a little bit of focus on resource management.
For those who prefer conquer-victory in civs games, this is your 40k fantasy mashup you never knew you needed.

However, the copius amount of early-stage DLC and the higher price tag on it is a MASSIVE turn-off. The game only has 4 races in the base game and if you want to unlock a single additional race, you have to pay 1/3 the price of the original game for it.
If you're bothered by the pay wall, just go play dawn of war dark crusade/soul storm, because the pay-wall to gaming is fierce with this game.

I love civs and I love 40k, but I also love base/empire and resource management and those two factors feel like an after-thought in this game.

I do not recommend because of the poor choice on micro-transactions and the one-dimensional gameplay with little-to-no story/Campaign.

USE A WALKTHROUGH!!!!!!!!!!
If you do not, you WILL PERMANENTLY lose certain characters before the finale. If they are your main party members, you will lose your will to finish the game.
I loved this game, but the finale is trash because of party-member perma death that you cannot avoid unless you complete the companion quests in a specific way.
Player agency is non-existent in whether those members live or die at end-game.
If you struggle with not being in control of outcomes and don't want to lose your favorite companions to poor production planning, then you NEED to endure minor spoilers to save them.

Aside from that major disclaimer, I LOVED this game. Very few bugs, nothing that was game breaking.
I'm SUPER looking forward to the next iteration and a more open-world, kingdom management expansion to the next system. I would absolutely adore more interaction with each settlement and more visual changes as they get upgraded.

Pros:
-LOOT
-The story is amazing
-Player choices matter!
-TONS of content
-Important side-quests
-Interesting characters
-Fun combat system
-ALL OF THE LOOT

Cons:
-Player choices can have devastating impacts that you cannot foresee without the ability to correct them when they come to fruition. The removal of player agency in the role play really dampens the effect this has.
-Some minor bugs are still present that are frustrating, but manageable.
-Save files are freaking massive and take up a ton of room. Compulsive saving is NECESSARY and really slows down the system and fills up your storage space.
-No internal mod support.
-Item prices late game seem arbitrary as "lower level" gear is sometimes still better than new gear, but is 1/10 the value.
-City customization could use a rework, as it is currently pretty stiff.
-City structures aren't interactive for the most part.
-Artisan interruptions in the throne room become frequent, cumbersome and micro-managey.

All in all, the game is amazing and super fun with mostly only cosmetic or quality of life issues and only a single major issue with removal of player agency at the end-game (can be altered in the game save files if you know what you're doing, however).
Despite that single large complain that I have about the game, it is insanely fun and I highly recommend it!

Got the bait and switch with the season pass. At the time it included all content, but after waiting a couple weeks and finally installing it, I find out that there are 4 more content packs that were released and the season pass is changed to "super pass" and is now 1 of 2 bulk DLC packs. A season pass includes current content and content not yet released. They circumvented that loophole by changing the name of the season pass so they could charge more money, even if you forked over the extra cash previously with the understanding you would receive future content because, well, it was included before.
That's easily one of the most sleezy business practices I've ever seen and it is literally a bait and switch.
Literally.
That is the definition of it.
Tell someone they are being sold one thing, but give them another.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game and was looking forward to playing the second one and you can bet I'll get my money's worth out of it, but I cannot endorse the game if the players are being treated like cash cows without any regard to public image.
Wait until it goes on super sale and then it's likely worth it. Full price is at least $80 over 2 years later.
