I am a Twitch Streamer (https://www.twitch.tv/beanyundead) who began gaming back in 1985. The first game I ever played was Draconian on my old TRS80. I've come a long way however, as my current rig is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core with a RTX4080 GPU. My favourite games include Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Bannerlord Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and Starfield, although any game with layered depth interests me. Take for example, the Total War series by Sega and Creative Assembly. They have several highly distinct layers in their games which create immersion. They have the strategy layer, which involves moving armies around a grand strategy map while managing resources, and a tactics layer, which involves moving individual troop formations around a battle-field. This layering effect sets the Total War series apart from more simple single layer ‘battle games’ (which just have the battles) and ‘grand strategy games’(which just have the grand strategy) as its layers bring you closer to true immersion; and immersion is the corner stone of great gaming as it is tied unequivocally to escapism. Bannerlord by Paradox Entertainment has a character generation ‘layer’, a role-playing ‘layer’, fight in battles ‘layer’, a strategic ‘layer’, a diplomatic ‘layer’ and many more. I dream of the day when a game is released with so many layers that it completely destroys my social life.
