Gunplay feels shallow and uninviting, making the similarty of every game glaringly evident. Changing characters and perks etc. makes very little difference in what is essentially a series of two minute chases followed by 30 second fights. It's obvious this was to set up seperate tracking and fighting elements, but the tracking aspect is basically just running in circles around the map toward the approximate location of where you know the monster is. The fighting is just the monster smacking at whoever he can get his hands on (usually the medic) until they either die or the dome goes down. There's no challenge or variation, it's just a giant chase followed by a brief fight and then another giant chase again.

The game itself is made wonderfully. The gunplay feels good, the stealth feels good, gadgets feel good, and making it off with millions in gold/cash feels good too. The replayability, in my opinion, is lacking greatly. Other people tell me that the game has incredible replayability but I just haven't seen it yet. That would be for you to decide. However, if it were just for that I would highly recommend the game simply due to it's usually insanely cheap price (either during sales or on sites like Kinguin/G2A/Humble Bundle).

This brings me to why I do not recommend this game. After promising fans for years that there would be no microtransactions, releasing $100 in DLC, and then teasing fans with a new update, Overkill completely 180'd and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ everyone. The game now has microtransactions (crates like TF2 and CSGO) and skins that ACTUALLY give a combat bonus to your weapon. They backstabbed their community and the obvious attempt at a money grab should make you want to find a different game from a more respectable brand. Hell, try Payday: The Heist if you haven't yet.

If you want to play the game during this event, I would highly recommend it, because it's fun and free, but I cannot recommend giving Overkill a dime of your money for the game after their casual and aloof betrayal of fans, followed by their silence at fans' dissappointment in them.

EDIT after almost 6 years in development: Please stop buying this ♥♥♥♥. Let it die. The "WINTER SALE" picture they update their game with shows that they're still trying to sell it as much as possible to fuel the perpetual dev process without actually making it a complete game. They even made a PAID DLC MAP before the game is even DONE. Get real. This is by far the biggest Early Access scam the world has ever seen and it's still being sold/purchased. What a joke.

If you look at any of the positive reviews of DayZ, you'll see that they are based on situations that arise organically from the game. Sure, DayZ provides for a lot of interesting situations between players, but any 'MMO' or similar game can provide that. It seems like DayZ enthusiasts don't find much fault with the bugs and low development value of the game because it simply provides character, instead lavishing praise on the fun moments they get from the game. I'm sorry, but the developers didn't do anything to make those moments happen. They made the sandbox, you're the one playing in it. I'd argue that not cleaning the bird and animal ♥♥♥♥ out of the sandbox over the past few years shows a major lack of either effort or skill in the developers.

One question: If you had been able to see a snapshot of the DayZ store page as it is today three years ago, would you have still purchased the game? So much needless garbage has been added to the game since and it's not even past 'Alpha.' By the time this game comes out, it will already be old.

If you buy this game now you are not only wasting your money you're encouraging companies like this to exploit the concept of early access. Staying in early access for years should not be legal, and the fact there isn't some recourse for people who paid 30 dollars for this hot pile (and still technically haven't received a full product) is a shame. Do not spend your money on this game. I cannot stress that enough. Donate it. Invest it. Save it. Use it for TP. I don't care. Don't use it for DayZ.
