I like it.
I never played any of the previous PoPs, maybe that's the reason, I don't know. The visuals and the art are the best part of it. Wanting to return to that world is what made me buy this game now, more than 10 years after it's release, and it is still beautiful. The animation is dated though, especially the facial animation, which is basically non-existent. And the fact that the game likes to take close-ups doesn't help.
The story... Well, it's based on zoroastrianism, which was a genuine persian religion, so points for that. Other than that, pretty generic: "bad god wants to escape, stop the bad god". And the twist ending, which lots of people didn't like for some reason. I guess anything other than sickly-sweet happy ending doesn't land well with the majority.

This is Stardew Valley. This is a buggy, unfinished, unpolished Stardew Valley, with boring plot, flat characters, and schizophrenic art design. Seriously, it looks like they couldn't decide whom they wanted to rip off: Nausicaä or Silly Symphony, so they decided to do both. So we have a post-apocalypse with the monsters named "Mr. Ladybug" and "Colorful Llama". And a robo-pig that attacks the enemies by butt-stomping them.

As with Planet Explorers (the previous game by Pathea), the devs had much more ambitions than they have expertise, so apart from design the game is full of technical problems. The optimization is non-existent, the game mechanics work poorly, and the overall feel of the game is very early-accessy (is this a term?). I really wanted to see the end of the story, but 70 hours in I'm so bored I literally can't continue. I looked the plot synopsis on the fandom wiki, and it is so much worse that the one I had imagined.

So bottom point is, if you liked Stardew Valley... go play it again, I guess.

The game itself is... fine, I guess. Lots of stuff, lots of skills, nice art.

There are two problems though. First, the mechanics. Health, shield, a bunch of resists and attack types, a skill tree you have no idea how to progress, etc. Most probably you'll end up just ignoring all that. Using the items that just look more expensive and unlocking skills in random.

Second problem is much bigger: the controls are garbage. You do everything with the mouse, and the keyboard is only for a couple of shortcuts, which you will use once per five minutes. Controllers are not supported yet. I'll edit my review when this changes (hopefully).

Buggy. Unfinished. It could be great, the art is beautiful, and the story is compelling. You want to go forward, you want to learn about this world. The problem is, there is no forward to go to. The story missions just stop, they never finished them.

So if 30 hours of teasing with no pay-off is your kind of thing, you might even like it. Otherwise, no.

They say you can watch burning fire forever. Not sure if it's true. I'm also not sure if this can be called "a game". You don't really have a goal. Well, technically you do, also there is some plot going, but mostly, you just meditate. You buy stuff, and burn it to buy more stuff. And burn it too, but this time, in a slightly different way.

The most accurate life simulator I've ever seen.

This game is probably not for you.

Ok, first things first: it's terrible without mods. So first thing you do is install CKAN (google KSP CKAN). Next you go to the official forums (NOT steam discussions) and watch what mods there are. You get KER, FAR, TWP, EVE (or SVE if your hardware is beefy enough), and maybe a couple of others. That's when you'll be ready to launch the game for the first time.

Later, when you are more familiar with the game, you'll know what other mods you might need. B9, Mk2X, KIS/KAS, TACLS, PM, CTT, Procedural Parts, Real Chutes, Real Heat, Real... whatever...

You're still here? Well, maybe this game IS for you then :)

OMG, this game is so flawed!

But

Flawed or not, this is THE first voxel-based adventure RPG ever! I so hope that this genre will see other titles in the future, but before that time comes - PE is pretty much the only choice.

Get it to set your expectations for the bright future.

This game is fun for some time. The idea behind it is certainly nice: you are building, exploring, and nursing your gnomes. Until you notice how bad the AI is.

It is atrocious.

Your smith takes a break after every smelted ingot and goes to the other end of a castle for a little chat? That's normal.
You mark the ore deposit and some random gnome starts to pick it with the basic tool while your master-miner chills out nearby? That's normal. Your gnome picks the armor piece you just crafted and goes with it through half the map to pick a ball of dirt? That's normal. You click on a snail and gnomes all over the map drop everything to charge for an attack? You see a gnome who picks one piece of ore but not the other because the other is assigned to some other gnome who is currently on the other end of the map? You order the ladder to be build and the gnomes do it by bringing one piece of ladder at a time althoug they can carry 5? This is all very normal.

So in the end you have no control over your gnomes. Bunch of them are going through the map looking busy, but you never know who is actually doing what, and when anything will be done. By this point the game stops being fun, and becames frustrating.

They say the game is released, but I don't really see it. It's still buggy, and it looks like half of the content is missing. The network support is terrible, the UI is uncomfortable.

The crafting system is complex, yet there is nothing to craft. To learn the recepieces you need to grind for exp, and the "quest system" is rudimentary. The flying laser shark was funny as a "first test of a quest system", but I never thought it'll be left there after the release.

All in all, it looks like the developers tired of this project half-way through. Now they are nowhere to be found, their website lies in ruins, and their promises are forgotten.

Go for Starbound instead. While Tiyuri had his share of delayed releases and controversies, and while he was a couple of years late, at lease he delivered a game. You know, the one that works, and is fun to play.
